C/2012 K1 판스타스(PanSTARRS) 혜성

북반구의 하늘을 천천히 휩쓸고 있는 PanSTARRS C/2012 K1 혜성이 6월 2일 큰곰자리를 촬영한 이 망원경 사진에서 포즈를 취하고 있다.

 

오르트 구름으로부터 날아와 아직 내태양계에 머물고 있는 이 혜성이 두 개의 꼬리를 뽐내고 있는데, 좀더 밝고 넓게 퍼진 먼지 꼬리와 구부러진 이온 꼬리가 각각 오른쪽과 아래쪽을 향하고 있다.

 

혜성의 응축된 초록빛 코마가 바로 위에 노란색으로 빛갈라짐을 보이는 배경의 별과 멋진 대조를 이루고 있다.

 

사진 상단 왼쪽에 보이는 NGC 3319는 보름달 지름의 거의 2배 크기로 펼쳐져 있다.
이 나선은하는 우리 은하에 속한 별들보다 훨씬 멀리 떨어진 4천 7백만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

 

그에 반해 이 혜성은 우리 지구로부터는 고작 14광분 거리에 위치하고 있다.

 

이 판스타스 혜성은 앞으로 몇 달동안 점점 밝아지면서 지구의 공전 궤도 바로 바깥에 위치하는 8월 말이 되면 태양 근일점에 다다르면서
망원경을 통해 혜성을 관측하는 사람들에게 멋진 관측 대상이 될 것이다.

Comet PanSTARRS with Galaxy

Explanation: Sweeping slowly through northern skies, the comet PanSTARRS C/2012 K1 posed for this telescopic portrait on June 2nd in the constellation Ursa Major. Now within the inner solar system, the icy body from the Oort cloud sports two tails, a lighter broad dust tail and crooked ion tail extending below and right. The comet's condensed greenish coma makes a nice contrast with the spiky yellowish background star above. NGC 3319 appears at the upper left of the frame that spans almost twice the apparent diameter of the full Moon. The spiral galaxy is about 47 million light-years away, far beyond the stars in our own Milky Way. In comparison, the comet was a mere 14 light-minutes from our fair planet. This comet PanSTARRS will slowly grow brighter in the coming months remaining a good target for telescopic comet watchers and reaching perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun, while just beyond Earth's orbit in late August.
