암벽 등반가와 개기일식

암벽등반을 하고 있는데 개기일식을 겪고 있는 태양에 의해 방해를 받는다면 어떨까?

기뻐하고 환호할만한 일이다!. 

노력에 대한 충분한 보상을 받는 것이기 때문이다.

 

수 개월간에 거쳐 현장답사를 진행하고, 오레곤 스미스락 주립공원에서 일주일 간 여러 장소를 물색한 후 

테드 헤서(Ted Hesser), 마르티나 티벨(Martina Tibell), 마이클 셰인블룸(Michael Shainblum)이 이끄는 사진가 및 암벽등반가 팀은 

100미터 높이의 원숭이얼굴 탑에서 드라마틱한 전경을 연출할 준비를 하고 일식을 기다렸다.

 

일식의 시간이 다가올 수록 긴장감은 더해졌고 사전에 계획된 위치는 면밀하게 검토되었으며 

이 와중에 암벽등반가인 토미 스미스(Tommy Smith)가 서 있어야 할 위치가 조정되었다.

 

계획대로 달이 태양의 전면을 막아서기 시작할 때 스미스 역시 계획대로 달의 앞쪽으로 이동하였다.

 

사진에 보이는 개기일식은 달표면 너머로 평균보다 약간은 더 멀리 떨어진 태양이 그 모습을 드러내는 단계인 다이아몬드 반지의 모습을 보여주고 있다.

The Climber and the Eclipse

Explanation: What should you do if your rock climbing picture is photobombed by a total eclipse of the Sun? Rejoice -- because your planning paid off. After months of considering different venues, and a week of scouting different locations in Oregon's Smith Rock State Park, a group of photographers and rock climbers led by AndrewStruder, Ted Hesser, Martina Tibell, and Michael Shainblum settled on picturesque 100-meter tall Monkey Face tower as the dramatic foreground for their images of the pending total solar eclipse. Tension mounted as the eclipse time approached, planned juxtapositions were scrutinized, and the placement of rock climber Tommy Smith was adjusted. Right on schedule, though, the Moon moved in front of the Sun, and Smith moved in front of the Moon, just as planned. The solar eclipse image displayed hereactually shows a diamond ring, an eclipse phase when a bit of the distant Sun is still visible beyond the Moon's surface.
