왜 어떤 나선은하들은 중심 주위를 두르고 있는 고리를 가지고 있는 걸까?

 

나선은하 NGC 1398은 별들이 진주처럼 박혀 있는 고리와 중심부를 휘감고 있는 가스 및 먼지뿐 아니라 그 중심을 가로지르는 별과 가스로 만들어진 막대와 마치 리본처럼 멀리까지 뻗어나가 있는 나선팔도 가지고 있다.

 

칠레 파라날 천문대에 있는 ESO 초거대망원경이 촬영한 이 사진은 아름다운 나선팔을 매우 세밀하게 보여주고 있다.

 

NGC 1398은 6,500만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다. 

즉, 지금 우리가 보는 이 은하는 지구에서 공룡이 멸망할 당시의 모습인 것이다.

 

이 은하는 화로자리 방향으로 작은 망원경으로도 관측이 가능하다.

 

중심부에 자리잡고 있는 고리는 별생성의 고밀도 파동이 팽창해나가면서 만들어진 것으로 생각된다. 

이러한 파동은 다른 은하와의 중력조석작용에 의해 만들어진 것일수도 있고 이 은하 자체에서 발생한 중력 비대칭에 의해 발생한 것일수도 있다.

Ribbons and Pearls of Spiral Galaxy NGC 1398

Explanation: Why do some spiral galaxies have a ring around the center? Spiral galaxy NGC 1398 not only has a ring of pearly stars, gas and dust around its center, but abar of stars and gas across its center, and spiral arms that appear like ribbons farther out. The featured image was taken with ESO's Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile and resolves this grand spiral in impressive detail. NGC 1398 lies about 65 million light years distant, meaning the light we see today left this galaxy when dinosaurs were disappearing from the Earth. The photogenic galaxy is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Furnace (Fornax). The ring near the center is likely an expanding density wave of star formation, caused either by a gravitational encounter with another galaxy, or by the galaxy's own gravitational asymmetries.
