수레바퀴 은하

두 개 은하가 충돌하면서 우주적 스케일로 놀라운 조형물을 만들어냈다. 수레바퀴은하가 바로 그것이다.

수레바퀴은하는 조각실자리 방향으로 5억 광년 거리에 위치하는 은하군의 한 부분이다.

이 은하군에서 비교적 규모가 작은 두 개 은하가 왼쪽으로 보인다.

 

수레바퀴은하의 테두리를 구성하고 있는 거대한 고리모양은 약 15만 광년의 지름을 가지고 있으며 이제 막 탄생하고 있는 극단적인 밝기와 질량을 가진 별들로 구성되어 있다.

 

은하가 충돌하여 서로를 관통하고 지나갈 때 각 은하를 구성하고 있는 별들이 충돌하는 것은 매우 드문 일이다.

다만 각 은하의 중력장은 충돌로 인해 심각하게 뒤틀리게 된다.

 

이 은하의 고리와 같은 구조는 상대적으로 작은 은하가 큰 은하를 관통하면서 야기된 중력파열의 결과이다. 

이로인해 별사이우주공간의 가스와 먼지가 응축되어 별들이 만들어지는 파동이 만들어지고 이 파동이 마치 연못에서 파동이 퍼져나가듯이 외곽으로 퍼져나가게 된 것이다.

 

충돌을 맞은 큰 은하는 우리 은하 미리내와 같은 나선은하는 아니었을 것으로 추정되며 충돌의 결과 바퀴살과 같은 모양으로 변형되고 말았다.

그런데 과연 충돌을 일으킨 작은 은하는 어떻게 되었을까?

Explanation: By chance, a collision of two galaxies has created a surprisingly recognizable shape on a cosmic scale, The Cartwheel Galaxy. The Cartwheel is part of a group of galaxies about 500 million light years away in the constellation Sculptor. Two smaller galaxies in the group are visible on the left. The Cartwheel Galaxy's rim is animmense ring-like structure 150,000 light years in diameter composed of newly formed, extremely bright, massive stars. When galaxies collide they pass through each other, their individual stars rarely coming into contact. Still, the galaxies' gravitational fields are seriously distorted by the collision. In fact, the ring-like shape is the result of the gravitational disruption caused by a small intruder galaxy passing through a large one, compressing the interstellar gas and dust and causing a a star formation wave to move out from the impact point like a ripple across the surface of a pond. In this case the large galaxy may have originally been a spiral, not unlike our own Milky Way, transformed into the wheel shape by the collision. But ... what happened to the small intruder galaxy?
