텍사스 상공의 슈퍼셀 구름

 

 

저것은 구름일까? 아니면 외계인의 우주선일까?

 

이것은 특이하고 때로는 매우 위험한 폭풍우 구름인 슈퍼셀(supercell)이라 불리는 구름이다.
슈퍼셀은 매우 위험한 토네이도나 우박, 강력한 하강기류나 폭우를 동반하기도 한다.

 

이러한 것들을 동반하지 않아도 슈퍼셀은 그 자체만으로도 대단히 인상적이다. 

 

슈퍼셀은 메조사이클론(mesocylone ) -- 하강기류에 의해 휩싸여있는 상승기류의 기둥 --을 품고 있다. 
이 구름은 지구상의 여러 군데에서 발생할 수 있는 현상이지만 미국 토네이도 엘리(Tornado Alley)에서는 아주 흔하게 나타나는 현상이다.

 

이 사진은 4시간에 걸쳐 촬영된 슈퍼셀 동영상으로 텍사스주 부커를 가로지르며 회전하는 슈퍼셀을 촬영한 것이다.
이 동영상에는 폭풍의 중심부근에서 새로운 구름이 생성되는 모습, 지상에 소용돌이치는 먼지들,

상층 구름에서 발생하는 번개의 모습이 인상적으로 만들어진 거대한 회전체와 함께 담겨있다. 
마지막으로 동영상의 마지막 장면으로 보이는 것처럼 폭우가 쏟아지는 것과 함께 슈퍼셀 구름은 사라져갔다.

A Supercell Thunderstorm Over Texas

Explanation: Is that a cloud or an alien spaceship? It's an unusual and sometimes dangerous type of thunderstorm cloud called a supercell. Supercells may spawn damaging tornados, hail, downbursts of air, or drenching rain. Or they may just look impressive. A supercell harbors a mesocylone -- a rising column of air surrounded by drafts of falling air. Supercells could occur over many places on Earth but are particularly common in Tornado Alley of the USA. Pictured above are four time lapse sequences of a supercell rotating above and moving across Booker, Texas. Captured in the video are new clouds forming near the storm center, dust swirling on the ground, lightning flashing in the upper clouds, all while the impressively sculptured complex rotates ominously. Finally, after a few hours, as shown in the final sequence, dense rain falls as the storm begins to die out.
