M45 : 플레이아데스 성단

 

 

 

플레이아데스 성단을 본 적이 있는가?

아마 본적이 있을진 몰라도 이 사진과 같이 먼지쌓인 모습은 볼 수 없었을 것이다.

 

아마도 밤하늘에서 가장 유명한 성단일 플레이아데스는 광해가 짙은 도시라도 쌍안경 없이도 관측할 수 있다.

 

어두운 지역에서 긴 노출을 사용한다면 플레이아데스를 감싸고 있는 이 먼지 구름은 매우 선명하게 그 모습을 드러낸다.

이 사진은 30시간의 노출을 사용하여 촬영한 것이고 보름달의 수배에 달하는 하늘의 영역을 담고 있다.

 

일곱 자매별 또는 M45로도 알려져 있는 플레이아데스는 황소자리 방향으로 400광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

현대적으로 변경된 공통된 전설은 이곳에서 가장 밝은 별 하나가 성단의 이름이 지어진 후 사그러들면서 육안으로는 오직 6개의 별만이 보인다고 전해지고 있다.

그러나 플레이아데스 성단을 구성하고 있는 실제 별들의 숫자는 아마도 일곱개 이상 혹은 그 이하일 수도 있을텐데
이는 전적으로 관측자의 주변을 감싼 하늘의 어둡기와 관측자 시야의 선명도에 달려 있다.

Explanation: Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as dusty as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The above exposure took about 30 hours and covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight.
