파라날 천문대 관측 데크에서 바라본 미리내

이 아름다운 파노라마 사진에는 ESO 초대형망원경(Very Large Telescope, 이하 VLT) 의 플래폼 위에 도열해선 미리내의 모습이 담겨 있다.

 

해발 2,635미터의 파라날 천문대는 천체 관측에 최적화된 관측지 중 하나이며 유럽연합의 최신 천문관측 설비들이 자리잡고 있는 곳이다.

 

미리내의 구름과 먼지가 가득 들어찬 구조가 천문대 데크를 가로지르며 희미한 불빛을 뿜어내는 띠처럼 보인다.

우리는 미리내의 나선팔 중 하나에 자리잡고 있으며 우리가 바라보는 미리내의 원반 모양 구조는 우리에게 그 모서리를 드러내고 있기 때문에 우리가 바라보는 미리내는 하늘을 가로지르고 있는 띠처럼 보인다.

 

우리 은하는 몇 개의 위성은하에 의해 둘러싸여 있다.
이 사진의 왼쪽으로 주요 위성은하인 소마젤란 은하와 대마젤란 은하가 보인다.
이들은 또한 국부은하군을 구성하는 주요 은하들이기도 하다.

 

VLT는 4개의 8.2미터 주망원경과 4 개의 1.8미터 보조 망원경으로 구성되어 있다.
이 망원경들은 모두 ESO 초대형망원경간섭계(Very Large Telescope Interferometer, VLTI)를 구성한다.

A Galactic view from the Observation Deck

This stunning panorama shows the Milky Way galaxy arching above the platform of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) on Cerro Paranal, Chile. At 2635 metres above sea level, Paranal Observatory is one of the very best astronomical observing sites in the world and is the flagship facility for European ground-based astronomy. The extent of our galaxy's cloudy and dusty structure can be seen in remarkable detail as a dim glowing band across the observation deck.

From Earth, we see the Milky Way as a band across the sky because from our vantage point in one of its spiral arms we are seeing its disc-shaped structure edge-on as we peer towards its centre. Our galaxy is surrounded by several smaller satellite galaxies. Prominent here, to the left, are the Small Magellanic Cloud and Large Magellanic Cloud — dwarf galaxies which are members of our Local Group of galaxies.

The VLT consists of four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes (UTs) and four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) which can be used together to form the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI).
