이 사진은 한 장의 사진이 아니라 각각 따로 촬영된 사진을 이어붙인 것이다.
각각의 사진은 북반구와 남반구의 1월 하늘을 보여주고 있다.

 

이 사진은 ESO의 사진 대사 페트르 호라렉(Petr Horalek)이 촬영하며 편집한 것이다.
사진의 위쪽 부분은 칠레 ESO 파라날 천문대에서 촬영한 것이며 아래 부분은 오라프스카 렌즈나(Oravska Lesna)라는 슬로바키아의 마을에서 촬영한 것이다.

 

선명한 X자 형태를 그리면서 상단 우측으로부터 하단 좌측으로 펼쳐져 있는 것은 미리내의 띠이다.
반대 방향으로 사진을 가로지르고 있는 빛기둥은 황도광이다.

 

사진 중앙에는 ESO의 초대형망원경(Very Large Telescope, VLT)을 구성하는 4개의 1.8미터 예비 망원경 중 하나가 놓여있다.
아래 사진은 파라날과는 상당히 멀리 떨어져 있는 지역이라서 전혀 유사한 형태가 보이지 않긴 하지만 마치 황도광이 이어진 것처럼 보이는 아래 사진의 빛은 오라프스카의 빛공해로 만들어진 것이다.

X Marks the Spot

This image is unreal — literally! Rather than being a single picture, it was created by combining two separate photographs together, and shows the January sky as seen from both hemispheres.

The skilled photographer was ESO Photo Ambassador Petr Horálek. Petr shot the upper part of the image from ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile and the lower part from the Slovakian village of Oravska Lesna, before combining the two to form this striking composite.

One arm of the distinctive X-shaped structure spreading from the top right to the bottom left of the frame is the lane of the Milky Way. The other diagonal comprises glowing columns of zodiacal light. In the centre of the image, is one of the four small 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes that make up part of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). A significant glow can be seen in the lower part of the image, caused by light pollution in Oravska, although there is no similar feature in the upper portion, due to the remote location of the Paranal site.
