NGC 7814, 작은 솜브레로 은하

망원경을 페가수스자리를 향해 겨냥하면 광활하게 펼쳐진 우리 은하의 별들과 멀리 위치하고 있는 은하들을 볼 수 있다.

 

NGC 7814가 두드러지게 보이는 이 아름다운 사진은 거의 보름달 하나 크기에 해당하는 너비를 담고 있다. 

NGC 7814는 그 유명한 M104를 닮은 외양으로 인해 작은 솜브레로라고 불리기도 한다.

 

솜브레로 은하와 작은 솜브레로 은하 모두 모서리를 우리에게 향하고 있는 나선은하이다. 

두 은하 모두 은하를 횡분활하고 있는 얇은 원반과 먼지 띠들과 함께 광활하게 펼쳐진 헤일로와 중앙 팽대부를 가지고 있다. 

 

NGC 7814는 4천만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있으며 그 지름은 약 6만 광년이다.

 

사실 NGC 7814는 솜브레로 은하와 거의 비슷한 크기를 하고 있지만 훨씬 더 먼거리에 위치하고 있어 비교적 더 작고 희미하게 보인다. 

깊은 노출을 통해 촬영한 작은 솜브레로 은하의 사진에서는 이 은하의 위성은하일 가능성이 있는 매우 작고 희미한 은하가 발견되기도 했다.

NGC 7814: The Little Sombrero in Pegasus

Explanation: Point your telescope toward the high flying constellation Pegasus and you can find this expanse of Milky Way stars and distant galaxies. Dominated by NGC 7814, the pretty field of view would almost be covered by a full moon. NGC 7814 is sometimes called the Little Sombrero for its resemblance to the brighter more famous M104, the Sombrero Galaxy. Both Sombrero and Little Sombrero are spiral galaxies seen edge-on, and both have extensive halos and central bulges cut by a thin disk with thinner dust lanes in silhouette. In fact, NGC 7814 is some 40 million light-years away and an estimated 60,000 light-years across. That actually makes the Little Sombreroabout the same physical size as its better known namesake, appearing smaller and fainter only because it is farther away. Very faint dwarf galaxies, potentially satellites of NGC 7814, have been discovered in deep exposures of the Little Sombrero.
