온하늘 스티브(Steve)

지난 9월 27일 어안렌즈로 담아낸 이 사진에는 북쪽(사진 상단) 지평선을 따라 초록색과 붉은색을 보여주는 오로라의 빛이 넘쳐나고 있다.

온화하고 청명한 밤, 미리내가 남부 앨버타의 천정을 가로질러 남서쪽 월령 6일의 달이 있는 곳에까지 뻗어있다.

 

남쪽 하늘을 가로지르고 있는 분홍색과 하얀색이 어우러진 특이한 아치는 스티브(Steve)라는 이름으로 알려져 있다.

이 이름은 앨버타 오로라 탐험가들로 구성된 페이스북 그룹에서 오로라와 비슷한 이 구조를 기록한 사람의 이름을 따서 명명되었다.

 

양자 오로라, 또는 양자 아치라고 잘못 인지되곤 하는 이 수수께끼의 스티브 아치는 오로라와 연관되어 있는 것으로 보이긴 하지만 오로라가 장막을 치는 곳보다는 훨씬 더 적도에 가까운 지역에서 그 모습을 드러낸다.

 

아마추어 과학자들에 의해 광범위하게 기록되기도 하고 최근에는 스왐 미션 위성(Swarm mission satellite)에 의해 직접적으로 탐사되기도 한 스티브 아치는 고에너지 전자에 의해 발생하는 발광이라기보다는 흐르는 가스로부터 나오는 열복사로 측정되었다.

 

스티브(Steve)라는 이름이 원래 이 현상을 일컫는 친숙한 이름인 속도증가에 따른 갑작스러운 열복사(Sudden Thermal Emission from Velocity Enhancement)의 앞글자를 따서 만들어진 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 

 

이 현상의 원인은 여전히 수수께끼로 남아 있다.

Explanation: Familiar green and red tinted auroral emission floods the sky along the northern (top) horizon in this fish-eye panorama projection from September 27. on the mild, clear evening the Milky Way tracks through the zenith of a southern Alberta sky and ends where the six-day-old Moon sets in the southwest. The odd, isolated, pink and whitish arc across the south has come to be known as Steve. The name was given to the phenomenon by the Alberta Aurora Chasers Facebook group who had recorded appearances of the aurora-like feature. Sometimes mistakenly identified as a proton aurora or proton arc, the mysterious Steve arcs seem associated with aurorae but appear closer to the equator than the auroral curtains. Widely documented by citizen scientists and recently directly explored by a Swarm mission satellite, Steve arcs have been measured as thermal emission from flowing gas rather than emission excited by energetic electrons. Even though a reverse-engineered acronym that fits theoriginally friendly name is Sudden Thermal Emission from Velocity Enhancement, his origin is still mysterious.
