M1의 놀라운 팽창

게성운은 찰스 메시에의 유명한 천체목록에 첫번째로 등재되어 있는 성운이다.

오늘날 이 성운은 거대한 질량의 별이 폭발하면서 남긴 팽창구름인 초신성 폭발잔해로 잘 알려져 있다.

게성운의 파괴적인 탄생은 1054년 천문학자들의 목격기록으로 남아 있다.

 

오늘날 지름 약 10광년까지 팽창한 이 성운은 여전히 초당 1,000 킬로미터의 속도로 팽창을 계속하고 있다.

지난 십여년 동안 팽창하는 성운의 모습이 멋진 동영상으로 기록되기도 했다.

2008년부터 2017년까지 호주의 원격천문대에서 동일한 망원경에 동일한 카메라를 장착하여 팽창하는 성운의 모습이 촬영되었다.

팽창하는 모습을 담은 동영상을 제작하는데는 총 32시간동안의 노출을 통해 담아낸 10장의 사진이 사용되었다.

 

이 고해상도 사진들은 놀라운 팽창을 계속하는 게성운 내부의 역동적인 고에너지복사도 보여주고 있다.

 

게성운은 황소자리방향으로 6,500 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

M1: The Incredible Expanding Crab

Explanation: The Crab Nebula is cataloged as M1, the first on Charles Messier's famous list of things which are not comets. In fact, the Crab is now known to be a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the explosion of a massive star. The violent birth of the Crab was witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. Roughly 10 light-years across today, the nebula is still expanding at a rate of over 1,000 kilometers per second. Over the past decade, its expansion has been documented inthis stunning time-lapse movie. In each year from 2008 to 2017, an image was produced with the same telescope and camera from a remote observatory in Austria. Combined in the time-lapse movie, the 10 images represent 32 hours of total integration time. The sharp, processed frames even reveal the dynamic energetic emissionwithin the incredible expanding Crab. The Crab Nebula lies about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus.
