발라드 호수 위의 미리내와 카리나성운

NGC 3372로도 알려져 있는 남반구의 보석 카리나대성운은 미리내가 품고 있는 거대별생성 구역 중 하나이다.

2017년 12월 25일의 고요한 밤하늘을 담아낸 이 사진에서 맨눈으로도 볼 수 있는 이 대성운이 서호주 이페머럴 소금호수, 발라드 호수 시그너처 언덕 위에 높이 자리잡고 있다.

 

사진에는 남쪽 지평선 너머까지 뻗어있는 미리내의 모습이 함께 담겨 있다.

 

미리내를 따라가다보면 시그너처 언덕의 오른쪽 경사면 위에서 켄타우루스자리 알파별과 베타별을 볼 수 있고 언덕 위쪽으로는 남십자자리와 석탄자루성운(Coalsack Nebula)을 볼 수 있다.

 

22개의 사진을 이어붙여 만들어진 이 사진은 남반구에서 볼 수 있는 미리내의 아름다움을 좀더 명확하게 볼 수 있도록 주변부를 잘라낸 것이다.

짧은 여름밤, 모자이크 사진을 만들기 위해 추적장치가 탑재된 카메라가 사용되었으며 달빛을 받고 있는 전면 풍경은 고정상태에서 촬영되었다.

Carina over Lake Ballard

Explanation: A jewel of the southern sky, the Great Carina Nebula, also known as NGC 3372, is one of our galaxy's largest star forming regions. Easily visible to the unaided eye it stands high above the signature hill of Lake Ballard, ephemeral salt lake of Western Australia, in this serene night skyscape from December 25, 2017. The Milky Way itself stretches beyond the southern horizon. Along the Milky Way, bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri lie just above the hill's right flank, with the Southern Cross and darkCoalsack Nebula above the hill top. Based on a 22 panel mosaic, the scene was cropped to reveal more closely the beauty of this region of the southern Milky Way. on that short summer night, a star tracking camera mount was used to record the mosaic images of the sky, but turned off to image the foreground in moonlight.
