리겔과 마녀머리성운(IC 2118)

어둠속에서 무시무시한 얼굴이 빛을 낸다. 

구부러진 옆모습이 마녀머리성운이라는 대중적인 이름을 떠올리게 만드는 이 성운은 별빛에 의해 빛을 내고 있다.

 

망원경으로 촬영한 이 매혹적인 사진 속 마녀는 오리온자리의 초거성인 리겔을 응시하고 있는듯한 인상을 준다.

 

IC 2118이라는 등재명을 가지고 있는 마녀머리성운은 50광년에 걸쳐 펼쳐져 있으며 리겔의 별빛을 반사하는 별사이우주공간의 먼지 알갱이들로 구성되어 있다.

마녀머리성운 및 리겔의 주위를 감싸고 있는 먼지의 푸른 빛은 단순히 리겔의 강력한 푸른색 별빛뿐만 아니라 각 먼지알갱이들이 붉은색보다 푸른색을 좀더 효과적으로 산란하기 때문에 나타나는 것이다.

 

동일한 물리적 과정이 지구의 한낮에도 나타나기 때문에 하늘이 파랗게 보이는 것이다. 

물론 지구 대기에서 별빛을 산란시키는 것은 질소와 산소 분자이다.

 

리겔과 마녀머리성운, 그리고 이들을 감싸고 있는 가스와 먼지들은 800 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

Rigel and the Witch Head Nebula

Explanation: By starlight this eerie visage shines in the dark, a crooked profile evoking its popular name, the Witch Head Nebula. In fact, this entrancing telescopic portraitgives the impression that the witch has fixed her gaze on Orion's bright supergiant star Rigel. More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is composed of interstellar dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. The blue color of the Witch Head Nebula and of the dust surrounding Rigel is caused not only by Rigel's intense blue starlight but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Rigel, the Witch Head Nebula, and gas and dust that surrounds them lie about 800 light-years away.
