NGC 474 은하에 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 것일까?

여러 겹으로 나타나고 있는 복사층이 복잡하게 얽히면서 상대적으로 특징없는 외양을 가진 타원은하에 예상 밖의 특징을 만들어주고 있다.

 

이와 같은 다층 구조의 원인은 현재로서 알려진 것은 없지만 과거 수십억년 동안 여러 작은 은하들이 흡수되면서 발생한 중력조석 작용의 결과일 수 있다.

 

마치 연못위에 퍼지는 파동과 같은 모습을 보이는 다층 구조는 NGC 474 바로 위에 자리잡은 나선은하와의 충돌이 지속되면서 이 거대 은하 전반에 고밀도 파동이 발생하며 만들어지는 것이다.

 

실제 원인이 무엇일지는 차치하고 이 사진은, 최소 몇몇 타원은하들은 가까운 과거에 형성되었다는 주장이 점점 널리 받아들여지고 있다는 사실을 드라마틱하게 보여준다. 

또한 대부분의 거대 은하들이 가지고 있는 외곽 헤일로는 단순하고 균일한 공간이 아니라 주변 여러 은하들과의 상호작용에 의해 촉발된 복잡성이 존재하는 부분이라는 점도 말해주고 있다.

 

우리 미리내의 헤일로 역시 이와 같이 예상밖의 복잡성이 존재하는 헤일로의 예가 될 수 있다.

 

NGC 474는 약 25만 광년의 폭을 가지고 있으며 물고기자리 방향으로 약 1억 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

Explanation: What's happening to galaxy NGC 474? The multiple layers of emission appear strangely complex and unexpected given the relatively featureless appearance of the elliptical galaxy in less deep images. The cause of the shells is currently unknown, but possibly tidal tails related to debris left over from absorbing numerous small galaxies in the past billion years. Alternatively the shells may be like ripples in a pond, where the ongoing collision with the spiral galaxy just above NGC 474 is causing density waves to ripple through the galactic giant. Regardless of the actual cause, the featured image dramatically highlights the increasing consensus that at least some elliptical galaxies have formed in the recent past, and that the outer halos of most large galaxies are not really smooth but have complexities induced by frequentinteractions with -- and accretions of -- smaller nearby galaxies. The halo of our own Milky Way Galaxy is one example of such unexpected complexity. NGC 474 spans about 250,000 light years and lies about 100 million light years distant toward the constellation of the Fish (Pisces).
