NGC 7331

거대하고 아름다운 나선은하 NGC 7331은 자주 미리내의 유사 은하로 언급되곤 한다.

 

북반구 페가수스 자리에 5천만 광년 떨어져 있는 NGC 7331은 일찌기 나선형 성운으로서 알려져 있었고, 

실제로 매우 밝은 은하 중 하나임에도 18세기 찰스 메시에의 유명한 천체목록인 메시에 목록에는 포함되어 있지 않은 천체이다.

 

이 은하의 원반은 거의 우리 시야각도에 모로 누워있기 때문에 오랜 망원경 노출을 통해 강한 원근감을 느껴지는 사진이 촬영되곤 한다.

 

허블우주망원경이 촬영한 이 사진에는 검은 먼지띠들과 무겁고 어린 별들을 가득 품고 있는 푸른색의 별무리들, 또한 별들이 만들어지고 있는 활성지역이 있음을 말해주는, 붉은 빛이 가득 들어찬 이 은하의 웅장한 나선팔들이 그 모습을 드러내고 있다.

노란빛으로 밝게 빛나는 중심지역은 늙고 차가운 별들을 품고 있다.

 

우리은하 미리내와 마찬가지로 나선은하 NGC 7331의 중심에는 초거대질량의 블랙홀이 자리잡고 있다.

Explanation: Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 7331 is often touted as an analog to our own Milky Way. About 50 million light-years distant in the northern constellationPegasus, NGC 7331 was recognized early on as a spiral nebula and is actually one of the brighter galaxies not included in Charles Messier's famous 18th century catalog. Since the galaxy's disk is inclined to our line-of-sight, long telescopic exposures often result in an image that evokes a strong sense of depth. In this Hubble Space Telescope close-up, the galaxy's magnificent spiral arms feature dark obscuring dust lanes, bright bluish clusters of massive young stars, and the telltale reddish glow of active star forming regions. The bright yellowish central regions harbor populations of older, cooler stars. Like the Milky Way, a supermassive black hole lies at the core of spiral galaxy NGC 7331.
