그랬을지도 모르겠지만 토성의 고리를 마치 하프처럼 연주할 수 있는 기회를 한 번 가져보라.

 

토성 고리를 소리로 표현한 이 영상은 토성의 중심 B고리의 상대적으로 밝은 부분에서는 높은 음을 낸다.

천연색을 담고 있는 사진은 2017년 7월 카시니우주선이 토성 고리를 바라보며 촬영한 것으로서 토성 고리를 촬영한 사진 중 가장 높은 해상도를 자랑하는 사진이다.

대부분이 물얼음으로 구성된 토성 고리가 백색이 아닌 햇볕에 그을린듯한 색깔을 보이는 이유는 아직도 여전히 연구가 진행중인 과제이다.

 

마이너 하모니를 선택하면 동일 사진이지만 인위적인 색깔을 입힌 다른 사진을 볼 수 있다. 

이 모드에서는 물얼음이 더더욱 많은 지역이 더 짙은 붉은 색으로 보인다.

Play Saturn's Rings Like a Harp

Explanation: Sure, you've seen Saturn's rings -- but have you ever heard them? Well then please take this opportunity to play Saturn's rings like a harp. In the featured sonification, increasing brighter regions of Saturn's central B-ring play as increasingly higher pitched notes. With a computer browser, click anywhere on the image to begin, and pluck consecutive strings by sliding the spacecraft icon's magnetometer boom across the strings. Both manual and automatic modes are possible. The featured natural-color image was taken by the late Cassini spacecraft in 2017 July as it grazed Saturn's rings and took the highest-resolution ring images ever. The reason why the mostlywater-ice rings have a tan hue -- instead of white -- is currently a topic of research. Played in minor harmony, a different false-color version of the same image appears where regions with a greater abundance of water ice appears more red.
