태양을 추격하는 수성.

이 사진은 지난 수요일 해가 진 서쪽하늘의 초승달을 촬영한 사진이다.

 

물론 초승달 주기에 접어든 이 달은 태양으로부터 절대 멀리에 위치할 수 없다.

 

마찬가지로 지구의 하늘에서 항상 태양과 가장 가까이 있는 별은 태양계에서 가장 안쪽 궤도를 공전하고 있는 행성 수성인데, 사진의 오른쪽 하단, 수평선을 따라 붉은 빛으로 불타오르는 석양의 가운데서 빛나고 있다.

 

수성은 대개 압도적인 태양 빛에 가려져 있어 관측하기가 어렵지만, 이 작은 행성의 모습은 이 행성이 앞으로 동쪽의 태양으로부터 점점 거리를 벌릴수록 훨씬 더 나은 모습을 보여주게 될 것이다.

 

1월 14일에는 NASA의 메신저 호가 첫번째 수성 근접 중력 가속 비행을 할 때  역시 멋진 수성의 모습을 보여주게 될 것이다.

Mercury Chases the Sunset

Explanation: This colorful view of the western sky at sunset features last Wednesday's slender crescent Moon. Of course, when the Moon is in its crescent phase it can never be far from Sun in the sky. Also always close to the Sun in Earth's sky is innermost planet Mercury, seen here below and right of center against the bright orange glow along the horizon. Mercury is usually difficult to glimpse because of the overwhelming sunlight, but increasingly better views of the small planet near sunset will be possible as it wanders farther east of the Sun in the coming days. on January 14th, NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft will have a good view too, as it makes its first Mercury flyby.
