the Cygnus Loop Nebula

 

 

 

뜨겁게 가열된 먼지의 성긴 덩굴과 자외선에서 밝게 불타오르는 가스를 담은 시그너스 루프 성운의 이 사진은

NASA의 은하진화탐사위성(GALEX,  Galaxy Evolution Explorer)에 의해 촬영되었다.

 

1500광년 거리에 위치하는 이 성운은

대략 5천년 전에서 8천년 전 사이에 거대질량의 별이 초신성 폭발을 일으킨 후 남은 잔해이다.

시그너스 루프는 밤하늘의 보름달의 3배가 넘는 영역에 뻗어있으며
백조자리에서 백조의 날개 중 하나에 이어져 붙어 있다.

 

자외선에서 탐지되는 가스와 먼지의 필라멘트들은
아직도 폭파지점에서 바깥쪽으로 팽창하고 있는 초신성의 폭발충격파에 의해 가열되었다.

 

원래의 초신성은 지구에서 육안으로 명확히 보일 정도로 밝았을 것이다.

PIA15415: Cygnus Loop Nebula

Wispy tendrils of hot dust and gas glow brightly in this ultraviolet image of the Cygnus Loop nebula, taken by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The nebula lies about 1,500 light-years away, and is a supernova remnant, left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred between 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. The Cygnus Loop extends over three times the size of the full moon in the night sky, and is tucked next to one of the "swan's wings" in the constellation of Cygnus.

The filaments of gas and dust visible here in ultraviolet light were heated by the shockwave from the supernova, which is still spreading outward from the original explosion. The original supernova would have been bright enough to be seen clearly from Earth with the naked eye.

The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena leads the Galaxy Evolution Explorer mission and is responsible for science operations and data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in Pasadena, manages the mission and built the science instrument. The mission was developed under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Researchers sponsored by Yonsei University in South Korea and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France collaborated on this mission.
