옐로우 스톤에서 촬영된 오로라

가끔은 하늘과 땅이 모두 융기한다. 

화려한 색깔의 오로라가 이달 초 예상치않게 발생했다. 

지평선 근처에는 초록색의 오로라가 보이고 머리 위에는 붉은색 오로라의 화려한 띠가 피어오르고 있다. 

밝은 달빛이 전면을 비추고 있는 가운데 익숙한 별들이 멀리 하늘에 보이고 있다. 

천체사진가가 주의깊게 계획을 수립하여 촬영한 이 사진은 미국 서부 옐로우스톤 국립공원의 화이트 돔 간헐천을 배경으로 촬영되었다. 

과연 자정이 막지난 시간 화이트 돔은 분출을 시작하면서 물과 수증기를 상공 몇 미터 높이로 뿜어내기 시작했다. 

간헐천은 수킬로미터 아래의 마그마에 의해 데워진 물이 갈라진 바위틈을 통해 지상으로 뿜어져 나오는 현상이다. 

알려진 간헐천의 대략 반 정도가 옐로우스톤 국립공원에서 발생한다. 

비록 지구자기폭풍이 만들어낸 오로라는 곧 잦아들었지만 화이트 돔 간헐천은 매 30분마다 분출을 계속하고 있다.

Aurora Over White Dome Geyser

Explanation: Sometimes both heaven and Earth erupt. Colorful aurorae erupted unexpectedly earlier this month, with green auroraappearing near the horizon and brilliant bands of red aurora blooming high overhead. A bright Moon lit the foreground of this picturesque scene, while familiar stars could be seen far in the distance. With planning, the careful astrophotographer shot this image mosaic in the field of White Dome Geyser in Yellowstone National Park in the western USA. Sure enough, just after midnight, White Dome erupted -- spraying a stream of water and vapor many meters into the air. Geyser water is heated to steam by scalding magmaseveral kilometers below, and rises through rock cracks to the surface. About half of all known geysers occur in Yellowstone National Park. Although the geomagnetic storm that created these aurorae has since subsided, eruptions of White Dome Geyser continue about every 30 minutes.
