IC 5067

 

 

이 드라마틱한 사진에서 두드러진 능선을 만들어내고 있는 구조는 IC 5067로 등재되어 있는 천체이다.

선명한 모습을 드러내고 있는 이 천체는 보다 더 큰 규모를 가진, 대중적으로 알려진 이름으로는 펠리칸 성운이라는 발광 성운의 한 부분으로서
능선구조는  펠리칸의 머리부분에서 목부분으로 이어지는 굴곡을 따라 10광년에 걸쳐 뻗어있다.

 

인위적인 색체를 입힌 이 사진에서 성운의 원자들로부터 복사되어 골고루 퍼져있는 협대역 복사선의 불꽃은 별 생성지역에 대해 허블 우주망원경 사진에서 다루는 대중적으로 잘 알려진 색채로 변환되어 있다.

 

0.5도의 광대역에 담겨있는 차가운 가스와 먼지로 이루어진 환상적인 구름들은 고온의 무거운 별들로부터 쏟아져나오는 폭풍과 복사에 의해 깎여나가고 있다.

깎여나가고 있는 구름의 부분부분을 확대해보면 이곳이 새로운 별들이 탄생하고 있는 지역임을 알려주는 명확한 사인을 보여주고 있다. 

펠리칸 성운은 IC 5070으로 등재되어 있으며 2천광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

펠리칸 성운을 찾으려면 백조자리의 밝은 별 데네브의 북동쪽을 찾아보면 된다.

IC 5067 in the Pelican Nebula

Explanation: The prominent ridge of emission featured in this dramatic skyscape is cataloged as IC 5067. Part of a larger emission nebula with a distinctive shape, popularly called The Pelican Nebula, the ridge spans about 10 light-years following the curve of the cosmic pelican's head and neck. This false color view also translates the pervasive glow of narrow emission lines from atoms in the nebula to a color palette made popular in Hubble Space Telescope images of star forming regions. Fantastic, dark shapes inhabiting the 1/2 degree wide field are clouds of cool gas and dust sculpted by the winds and radiation from hot, massive stars. Close-ups of some of the sculpted clouds show clear signs of newly forming stars. The Pelican Nebula, itself cataloged as IC 5070, is about 2,000 light-years away. To find it, look
