백조의 담장을 따라서

생생한 하늘의 풍경에서 두드러지게 보이는 능선은 백조의 담장(the Cygnus Wall)으로 알려져 있다.  
 
대중적인 명칭으로는 북아메리카 성운이라 불리는, 독특한 형태를 가진의 발광성운의 한 부분이기도 한 이 능선은 10광년에 걸쳐 뻗어있으며

이는 북아메리카 성운에서 멕시코의 서쪽 해안에 해당하는 부분이다.

협대역 데이터로 만들어진 이 확대 사진에는 황과 수소, 산소원자로부터 복사되어 나오는 빛이 각각 붉은색과 초록색, 그리고 파란색으로 나타나고 있다.

전리현상에 의해 밝게 빛을 받고 있는 전면부에는 군데군데 그림자가 생기면서 어둡게 보이는 먼지들의 세세한 모습이 잘 나타나고 있다.

이 지역에 위치하는 갓 태어난 뜨겁고 무거운 별들로부터 발생한 강력한 복사에 의해 조각된 이 어두운 먼지덩이들은 그 내부에서 새로운 별들을 만들고 있을 차가운 가스와 먼지들로 만들어진 구름들이다.

 

NGC 7000으로 등재되어 있기도 한 북아메리카 성운은 1500광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

이 성운을 찾고 싶으면 백조자리의 밝은 별 데네브의 북동쪽을 보면된다.

Explanation: The prominent ridge of emission featured in this vivid skyscape is known as the Cygnus Wall. Part of a larger emission nebula with a distinctive shape popularly called The North America Nebula, the ridge spans about 10 light-years along an outline that suggests the western coast of Mexico. Constructed from narrowband image data, the cosmic close-up maps emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms to red, green, and blue colors. The result highlights the bright ionization front with fine details of dark, dusty forms in silhouette. Sculpted by energetic radiation from the region's young, hot, massive stars, the dark shapes inhabiting the view are clouds of cool gas and dust with stars likely forming within. The North America Nebula itself, NGC 7000, is about 1,500 light-years away. To find it, look northeast of bright star Deneb in the high flying constellation Cygnus.
