특이한 타원은하 센타우루스 A

이 은하의 중심에서는 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 것일까?

특이하고 드라마틱한 먼지 대역이 타원은하 센타우루스 A의 중심을 가로지르고 있다.
이 먼지 대역들은 매우 두꺼워서 가시광선으로 관측했을 때 은하의 중심을 거의 완전히 가리고 있다.

센타우루스 A의 붉은 별들과 둥근 외형은 거대한 타원은하의 전형적인 현상이며 이 유형에 속하는 은하들은 일반적으로 검은 먼지들도 얼마 없기 때문에 센타우루스 A는 특별히 예외적인 은하라고 할 수 있다.

 

NGC 5128로도 알려져 있는 센타우루스 A는 일반적인 타원은하와는 다른 특성을 가지고 있다.
이 타원은하는 매우 높은 비율의 갓 태어난 푸른 별들을 가지고 있으며 매우 강력한 라디오파 복사를 발생시키고 있다.

이러한 증거는 센타우루스 A가 일반적인 두 개의 은하가 서로 충돌하면서 만들어진 결과일 것으로 추측하는 근거가 된다.

이러한 충돌의 의해 수많은 어린 별들이 만들어졌을 것으로 생각되지만 센타우루스 A의 독특한 먼지 벨트의 생성에 대한 세부 내역은 여전히 연구과제로 남아 있다.

 

센타우루스 A는 1300만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있어 가장 가까이 위치하는 활성은하이기도 하다.

사진의 센타우루스 A는 6만 광년의 폭을 가지고 있으며 센타우루스 자리에서 쌍안경으로도 관측이 가능하다.

Peculiar Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A

Explanation: What's happened to the center of this galaxy? Unusual and dramatic dust lanes run across the center of elliptical galaxy Centaurus A. These dust lanes are so thick they almost completely obscure the galaxy's center in visible light. This is particularly unusual as Cen A's red stars and round shape are characteristic of a giant elliptical galaxy, a galaxy type usually low in dark dust. Cen A, also known as NGC 5128, is also unusual compared to an average elliptical galaxy because it contains a higher proportion of young blue stars and is a very strong source of radio emission. Evidence indicates that Cen A is likely the result of the collision of two normal galaxies. During the collision, many young stars were formed, but details of the creation of Cen A's unusual dust belts are still being researched. Cen A lies only 13 million light years away, making it the closest active galaxy. Cen A, pictured above, spans 60,000 light years and can be seen with binoculars toward the constellation of Centaurus.
