이 행성은 고작 16광년밖에 떨어져 있지 않다.
이 행성이 생명을 품고 있을까?

 

최근에 발견된 외계행성 글리제 832c(Gliese 832c)는 우리 태양보다 약간 덜 밝은 별의 주위를 가까운 거리에서 공전하고 있음이 밝혀졌다.

그런데 재미있는 것은 글리제 832c가 받는 빛의 평균 양이 우리 지구가 태양으로부터 받는 빛의 평균과 거의 비슷하다는 것이다.

 

이 행성은 자신의 별이 미세하게 흔들리는 현상을 통해 발견됐기 때문에 이 삽화는 행성의 모습을 상상으로 그려본 것이다.
사실 글리제 832c의 질량이나 크기, 대기와 같은 내용은 상당부분 미지의 영역으로 남아 있다.

 

만약 글리제 832c의 대기가 지구와 같다면 이 행성은 가혹한 계절을 보내고 있지만 생명을 품을 가능성이 있는 슈퍼지구로 간주될 수 있을 것이다.

그러나 다른 한편으로 글리제 832c가 금성과 같이 두꺼운 대기를 가지고 있다면, 이는 슈퍼 금성에 해당하는 행성으로서 우리가 아는한 생명체는 존재하지 않게 된다.

 

16광년이라는 거리는 글리제 832 행성계가 현재로서는 생명체가 존재할 가능성이 있는 지구로부터 가장 가까운 행성계임을 말해준다.

 

글리제 832와의 대단히 가까운 거리로 인하여 보다 세부적인 앞으로의 관측이 예약되어 있는 셈이며,
가장 극적이며 낙관적인 시나리오는 만약에 그곳에 지능을 가진 생명체가 있다면 실제 대화가 가능할 것이라는 점이다.

Gliese 832c: The Closest Potentially Habitable Exoplanet

Explanation: This planet is only 16 light years away -- could it harbor life? Recently discovered exoplanet Gliese 832c has been found in a close orbit around a star that is less bright than our Sun. An interesting coincidence, however, is that Gliese 832c receives just about the same average flux from its parent star as does the Earth. Since the planet was discovered only by a slight wobble in its parent star's motion, the above illustration is just an artistic guess of the planet's appearance -- much remains unknown about Gliese 832c's true mass, size, and atmosphere. If Gliese 832c has an atmosphere like Earth, it may be a super-Earth undergoing strong seasons but capable of supporting life. Alternatively, if Gliese 832c has a thick atmosphere like Venus, it may be a super-Venus and so unlikely to support life as we know it. The close 16-light year distance makes the Gliese 832 planetary system currently the nearest to Earth that could potentially support life. The proximity of the Gliese 832 system therefore lends itself to more detailed future examination and, in the most spectacularly optimistic scenario, actual communication -- were intelligent life found there.
