IC 2944 : 달리는닭성운 (the Running Chicken Nebula)

이 거대한 닭이 낳은 알이 아마도 별을 만든 것이리라.

 

과학적으로 할당된 색채를 담고 있는 이 발광성운은 IC 2944로 등재되어 있긴 하지만 보다 큰 규모에서 나타나는 형태로 인해 달리는닭성운(the Running Chicken Nebula)'이라 불리기도 한다.

 

배경을 막아서고 있는 우주먼지를 담고 있는 이 사진의 위쪽으로 작고 검은 분자 구름들이 여러 개 보인다.

발견자의 이름을 따서 세커리 글로블(Thackeray's Globules)이라 부르는 이 '알'들은, 비록 주변에 존재하는 갓 태어난 별들로부터 발생하는 강력한 복사에 의해 빠르게 침식되어 사라질지도 모를 불확정적인 운명을 가진 상태이긴 하지만 중력 압축 작용으로 인해 새로운 별들이 만들어질 가능성이 있는 지역들이기도 하다.

 

불타오르는 가스 조각과 빛을 반사해내는 먼지들이 가득 들어찬 지역들과 함께 이 무겁고 왕성한 에너지를 가진 별들은 산개성단 콜린더 249(Collinder 249)를 형성하고 있다.

 

약 60 광년의 폭을 담고 있는 이 멋진 사진의 성운은 약 6,000 광년 거리에 자리잡고 있다.

Stars and Globules in the Running Chicken Nebula

Explanation: The eggs from this gigantic chicken may form into stars. The featured emission nebula, shown in scientifically assigned colors, is cataloged as IC 2944 but known as the Running Chicken Nebula for the shape of its greater appearance. Seen toward the top of the image are small, dark molecular clouds rich in obscuring cosmic dust. Called Thackeray's Globules for their discoverer, these "eggs" are potential sites for the gravitational condensation of new stars, although their fates are uncertain as they are also being rapidly eroded away by the intense radiation from nearby young stars. Together with patchy glowing gas and complex regions of reflecting dust, these massive and energetic stars form the open cluster Collinder 249. This gorgeous skyscape spans about 60 light-years at the nebula's estimated 6,000 light-year distance.
