오리온 : 벨트와 불꽃, 말머리

그 유명한 오리온의 벨트를 둘러싸고 있는 것은 무엇일까?

 

깊은 노출을 이용하여 찰영한 사진은 암흑성운에서 별무리까지 

오리온분자구름복합체의 가스다발속에 포함되어 있는 있는 천체들을 보여주고 있다.

 

사진 왼쪽, 사선으로 도열해선 가장 밝은 별 3개는 그 유명한 오리온의 벨트를 구성하는 3개의 별이다.

이 세 개의 별들 중 가장 하단에 있는 알니탁 바로 아래로는 이온화된 수소 가스로 불타고 있으면서 검고동색의 먼지 다발 속에 잠겨들어가는 불꽃 성운이 자리잡고 있다.

 

알니탁의 오른쪽으로는 고밀도 먼지가 연출해낸, 아마도 밤하늘에서 가장 유명한 천체일 말머리성운이 자라잡고 있다.

약 1,500 광년 거리의 이 검은 분자 구름은 바나드 33으로 등재되어 있으며 

오리온자리 시그마별에 의해 밝은 빛을 반사해 내는 배경 덕분에 그 모습을 볼 수 있다.

 

말머리성운의 모습은 향후 수백만년동안 서서히 변형되어가다가 결국 고에너지 별빛에 의해 파괴될 것이다.

Orion: Belt, Flame, and Horsehead

Explanation: What surrounds the famous belt stars of Orion? A deep exposure shows everything from dark nebula to star clusters, all embedded in an extended patch ofgaseous wisps in the greater Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The brightest three stars, appearing diagonally on the left of the featured image are indeed the famous three stars that make up the belt of Orion. Just below Alnitak, the lowest of the three belt stars, is the Flame Nebula, glowing with excited hydrogen gas and immersed in filaments of dark brown dust. Just to the right of Alnitak lies the Horsehead Nebula, a dark indentation of dense dust that has perhaps the most recognized nebular shapes on the sky. The dark molecular cloud, roughly 1,500 light years distant, is cataloged as Barnard 33 and is seen primarily because it is backlit by the nearby massive starSigma Orionis. The Horsehead Nebula will slowly shift its apparent shape over the next few million years and will eventually be destroyed by the high-energy starlight.
