18세기 프랑스에서 혜성을 찾아 하늘을 뒤지던 천문학자 찰스 메시에(Charles Messier)는 확실히 혜성이 아닌 천체를 만나게 되면 그 목록을 부지런히 기록하였다.

이 천체는 오늘날 아주 유명해진 그 목록에 27번으로 등록되어 있는 천체이다.

 

사실 21세기의 천문학자들은 이 천체를 행성상성운으로 구별하겠지만, 작은 망원경을 통해 본 이 천체의 모습이 비록 행성과 같이 둥근 모습을 보인다 하더라도 이 천체는 확실히 행성은 아니다.

 

M27은 태양과 같은 별이 그 중심부에서 핵연료를 모두 소진하고 나서 만들어진 가스상 발광성운의 전형적인 예이다.

 

이 성운은 우주공간으로 뿜어져나온 별의 외곽층으로 만들어진 것이다. 

또한 눈에 보이는 불꽃은 죽어가는 별이 뿜어내는 강력한 자외선에 의해 이온화된 원자들로 만들어진 것이다.

 

아령성운(the Dumbbell Nebula)이라는 대중적인 이름을 가지고 있는 이 아름다운 대칭형 가스구름은 2.5광년 이상의 지름을 가지고 있으며 여우자리방향으로 1,200광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

 

이 멋진 컬러 사진은 8.2미터 쓰바루 망원경으로 획득한 광대역 및 협대역 관측 데이터를 합성하여 만들어진 것이다.

Explanation: While hunting for comets in the skies above 18th century France, astronomer Charles Messier diligently kept a list of the things he encountered that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on his now famous not-a-comet list. In fact, 21st century astronomers would identify it as a planetary nebula, but it's not a planet either, even though it may appear round and planet-like in a small telescope. Messier 27 (M27) is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula created as asun-like star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. The nebula forms as the star's outer layers are expelled into space, with a visible glow generated by atoms excited by the dying star's intense but invisible ultraviolet light. Known by the popular name of the Dumbbell Nebula, the beautifully symmetric interstellar gas cloud is over 2.5 light-years across and about 1,200 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula. This spectacular color image incorporates broad and narrowband observations recorded by the 8.2 meter Subaru telescope.
