무엇이 IC 418의 이처럼 독특한 질감을 만들어낸 것일까?

 

순환패턴그리기 도구를 이용하여 그려낸 순환패턴과 유사하게 생겨 스피로그래프 성운(the Spirograph)이라는 이름이 붙은 행성상성운 IC 418은 잘 이해되지 않는 패턴을 보여주고 있는 천체이다. 

 

이것은 아마도 수 시간 동안 예측치 못한 밝기 변화를 보이는 중심의 변광성으로부터 쏟아져나오는 무질서한 별폭풍과 관련된 것일수도 있다. 

이와는 대조적으로 어떤 증거는 이 행성상성운이 불과 수백만년 전 태양과 비슷한, 그 기재가 잘 알려진 별이었을 것으로 예측하고 있다. 

 

고작 수천 년 전 IC 418은 아주 일반적인 적색거성이었을 것이다. 

그러나 핵연료가 모두 소진되고 나서 팽창을 시작한 외곽 표비는 모두 사라져 버리고 사진에서처럼 마지막으로 백색 난쟁이별이 남게 되었다. 

이 중심 핵으로부터 쏟아져 나오는 빛이 주위의 원자들을 이온화 시키면서 빛을 뿜어내게 만들고 있다. 

 

IC 418은 2천 광년 거리에 위치하고 있으며 0.3광년의 폭으로 펼쳐져 있다. 

 

허블우주망원경으로 촬영되어 인위적인 색깔을 입힌 이 사진은 이 행성상성운의 독특한 세부를 드러내주고 있다.

Explanation: What is creating the strange texture of IC 418? Dubbed the Spirograph Nebula for its resemblance to drawings from a cyclical drawing tool, planetary nebulaIC 418 shows patterns that are not well understood. Perhaps they are related to chaotic winds from the variable central star, which changes brightness unpredictably in just a few hours. By contrast, evidence indicates that only a few million years ago, IC 418 was probably a well-understood star similar to our Sun. only a few thousand years ago,IC 418 was probably a common red giant star. Since running out of nuclear fuel, though, the outer envelope has begun expanding outward leaving a hot remnant coredestined to become a white-dwarf star, visible in the image center. The light from the central core excites surrounding atoms in the nebula causing them to glow. IC 418 lies about 2000 light-years away and spans 0.3 light-years across. This false-color image taken from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals the unusual details.
