태양 코로나의 세부

한순간 지나가는 개기일식의 어둠 속에서 태양 코로나를 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.

이 사진에서는 대개 대단히 밝게 빛나는 태양 원반에 압도되어 보이지 않는 태양의 외곽 대기이며 광활하게 펼쳐져 있는 태양 코로나가 

그 매력적인 모습을 보여주고 있다.

 

비록 맨눈으로 식별이 되긴 하지만 그 미묘한 세부와 코로나의 광활한 밝기 범위를 모두 사진으로 담아내기는 대단히 어렵다.

 

그러나 2008년 8월, 몽골에서 발생한 개기일식동안 촬영된 이 태양 코로나 사진은

여러장의 사진들과 디지털 후보정을 이용하여 그 세세한 모습을 보여주고 있다.

 

뜨거운 가스와 자기장의 지속적인 뒤섞임 속에서 발생하는 빛의 산란 현상과 복잡미묘한 층들이 선명하게 그 모습을 드러내고 있다.

태양 테두리 바로 위로 밝은 고리를 만들고 있는 홍염이 분홍색으로 그 모습을 드러내고 있다.

 

다음 주 개기일식이 미국을 가로지르는 동안 청명한 하늘을 통해 이와 비슷한 태양 코로나를 볼 수 있을 것이다.

Detailed View of a Solar Eclipse Corona

Explanation: Only in the fleeting darkness of a total solar eclipse is the light of the solar corona easily visible. Normally overwhelmed by the bright solar disk, the expansive corona, the sun's outer atmosphere, is an alluring sight. But the subtle details and extreme ranges in the corona's brightness, although discernible to the eye, are notoriously difficult to photograph. Pictured here, however, using multiple images and digital processing, is a detailed image of the Sun's corona taken during the 2008 August totalsolar eclipse from Mongolia. Clearly visible are intricate layers and glowing caustics of an ever changing mixture of hot gas and magnetic fields. Bright looping prominencesappear pink just above the Sun's limb. A similar solar corona might be visible through clear skies in a thin swath across the USA during a total solar eclipse that occurs just one week from tomorrow.
