이스터 섬 상공의 오리온.

왜 이스터 섬에는 이와 같은 석상들이 있는 걸까? 

그 이유는 아무도 알지 못한다.

확실한 것은 이곳에 무려 800개가 넘는 거대 석상이 있다는 사실 뿐이다.

 

이스터 섬에 있는 석상들은 평균적으로 일반인의 키보다 두 배 이상 크고 무게는 무려 200배가 넘어간다.

 

극히 특수한 경우 이 범상치 않은 석상의 의미나 역사가 열려져 있긴 하지만, 대부분은 이 석상들은 약 700년 전에 잊혀진 문명권에서 지역 족장의 이미지를 따서 만들어졌을 것으로 추측되고 있다.

 

2016년에 촬영된 이 사진은 그 유명한 삼태성과 찬란하게 빛나는 별 베텔게우스(왼쪽 멀리 붉은색 별) 및 리겔(상단 중앙)을 품고 있는 오리온자리를 배경으로 고대 모아이 석상 중 하나를 담고 있다.

그런데 이 석상은 마치 밤하늘에서 가장 밝은 별인 시리우스(오른쪽 멀리)를 응시하고 있는 듯이 보인다.

Explanation: Why were the statues on Easter Island built? No one is sure. What is sure is that over 800 large stone statues exist there. The Easter Island statues, stand, on the average, over twice as tall as a person and have over 200 times as much mass. Few specifics are known about the history or meaning of the unusual rock sculptures, but many believe that they were created about 700 years ago in the images of local leaders of a lost civilization. Featured here, one of the ancient Moai sculptures was imaged in 2016 before the constellation of Orion, including the famous line of three belt stars and brilliant stars Betelgeuse (far left in red) and Rigel (upper center). The stone giantappears, however, to be inspecting the brightest star in the night sky (far right): Sirius.
