쌍둥이자리 별비

지구가 활동성 소행성인 파에톤 3200이 남긴 먼지를 통과하면서 나타나는 쌍둥이자리 별비는 올해 우리를 실망시키지 않았다.

북반구에서 촬영된 이 사진에는 쌍둥이자리에서 퍼져나오는 별똥별들이 담겨있다.

 

이 사진을 만들기 위해 12월 13일 밤 8.5시간동안 촬영된 사진 중 유성궤적을 담은 37개의 사진이 취합되었다.

이렇게 취합된 사진들과 MUSER 전파망원경 위로 별빛 가득한 하늘을 담은 사진이 최종적으로 합성되었다. 

MUSER는 중국 내몽골 자치주의 밍안투 천문대에 있는 태양전파망원경으로서 이곳은 베이징으로부터는 약 400킬로미터 떨어져 있다.

 

큰개자리 알파별인 시리우스가 전파망원경 바로 위에 떠 있고 미리내는 천정을 향해 뻗어올라가고 있다.

미리내 오른쪽으로는 오리온자리의 베텔게우스가 노란색 빛을 과시하고 있다.

 

별비의 복사점은 왼쪽 상단, 쌍둥이자리의 두 개 별인 카스토르와 폴룩스 위쪽에 위치하고 있다.

이처럼 별똥별이 방사형으로 뻗어나오는듯한 효과는 평행하게 떨어지는 별똥별을 멀리서 바라보기 때문에 발생한다.

쌍둥이자리의 운석들은 대략 초속 22킬로미터의 속도로 지구대기로 진입한다.

Geminids of the North

Explanation: Earth's annual Geminid meteor shower did not disappoint as our fair planet plowed through dust from active asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Captured in thisnorthern hemisphere nightscape, the meteors stream away from the shower's radiant in Gemini. To create the image, 37 individual frames recording meteor streaks were taken over period of 8.5 hours during the night of December 12/13. In the final composite they were selected and registered against the starry sky above a radio telescope dish of MUSER, a solar-dedicated radio telescope array at astronomically-named Mingantu Station in Inner Mongolia, China, about 400 kilometers from Beijing. Sirius, alpha star of Canis Major, shines brightly just above the radio dish and the Milky Way stretches toward the zenith. Yellowish Betelgeuse is a standout in Orion to the right of the northern Milky Way. The shower's radiant is at top left, high above the horizon near Castor and Pollux the twin stars of Gemini. The radiant effect is due to perspective as the parallel meteor tracks appear to converge in the distance. Gemini's meteors enter Earth's atmosphere traveling at about 22 kilometers per second.
