광대역으로 촬영한 M78

오리온자리에는 먼지구름들과 불타오르는 성운들이 가득 자리잡고 있다.

그 중 가장 밝은 축에 드는 성운인 M78이 오리온 벨트의 북부 지역을 넓은 화각으로 잡아낸 이 화려한 사진의 한 가운데 담겨 있다.

 

약 1,500 광년 거리에서 푸른 빛을 뿜어내는 이 반사성운 약 5광년의 폭을 가지고 있다.

이 성운의 색조는 갓태어난 뜨거운 별들의 빛이 반사되면서 만들어진 것이다.

 

M78 바로 왼쪽에 보이는 것은 반사성운 NGC 2071이다.

 

오른쪽으로 훨씬더 밀집되어 보이는 천체는 맥네일의 성운(McNeil's Nebula)이라는 흥미로운 천체이다. 

최근 이 성운은 우리 태양과 비슷한 성분의 어린 별에 영향을 받은 깜빡이 성운이라는 사실이 밝혀졌다.

 

허빅-하로 천체들로부터 뿜어져나오는 짙은 붉은 색의 얼룩들과 형성과정에 있는 별들로부터 뿜어져나오는 고에너지 제트들이 검은 먼지 띠들을 배경으로 도드라져 보인다.

 

이 사진은 이온화된 수소 가스로부터 복사되어 나오는 훨씬더 희미한 빛들이 이 지역 전반에 걸쳐 퍼져 있는 모습도 함께 보여주고 있다.

Explanation: Interstellar dust clouds and glowing nebulae abound in the fertile constellation of Orion. one of the brightest, M78, is centered in this colorful, wide field view, covering an area north of Orion's belt. At a distance of about 1,500 light-years, the bluish reflection nebula is around 5 light-years across. Its tint is due to dust preferentiallyreflecting the blue light of hot, young stars. Reflection nebula NGC 2071 is just to the left of M78. To the right, and much more compact in appearance, the intriguing McNeil's Nebula is a recently recognized variable nebula associated with a young sun-like star. Deeper red flecks of emission from Herbig-Haro objects, energetic jets from stars in the process of formation, stand out against the dark dust lanes. The exposure also brings out the region's fainter pervasive glow of atomic hydrogen gas.
