9월의 오로라

내일 태양은 하늘의 적도를 가로질러 남쪽으로 향하면서 추분점에 도착하게 된다.

이 사건은 남반구에는 봄의 시작을, 그리고 북반구에는 가을의 시작을 알리는 표시가 된다. 

또한 아직까지 그 연결관계는 밝혀지지 않았지만 분점은 지구자기장폭풍의 증가를 가져오기도 한다. 

그래서 북반구의 밤이 길어질 때, 분점은 오로라를 사냥하고 다니는 이들에게 적당한 때가 왔음을 알리는 전령이 되기도 한다.

9월 20일 촬영된, 다채로운 빛깔의 북극광을 잡아낸 이 와이드 앵글 사진은 노르웨이 북부 트롬쇠 외곽 노르웨이해 근처에서 촬영되었다. 

고도 100킬로미터 또는 그 이상에서 빛을 내는 오로라의 선들은 평행하게 정렬되지만, 

사진을 잡아낸 각도에서는 소나무의 그림자 뒤에서 방사상으로 뻗어내려오는 모양을 연출하고 있다. 

이 자신에는 매혹적인 북반구의 별들도 함께 담겨있다. 

소나무 끝의 오른쪽으로 북극성이 보이고 그 왼쪽으로는 노란색의 거성이자 카시오페이아의 알파별인 셰다르, 

그리고 오른쪽으로는 작은곰자리의 베타별인 코찹이 보인다. 

사진의 하단 왼쪽으로는 초록빛의 오로라 커튼 뒤로 알타이르가 밝게 빛나고 있다.

September's Aurora

Explanation: September's equinox arrives tomorrow as the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south. The event marks the astronomical beginning of spring in the southern hemisphere and autumn in the north. And though the connection is still puzzling, the equinox seasons bring an increase in geomagnetic storms. So as northern nights grow longer, the equinox also heralds the arrival of a good season for aurora hunters. Recorded on September 20, these colorful northern lights were captured with camera and wide-angle lens near the Norwegian Sea coast outside Tromsø in Northern Norway. Shining at altitudes of 100 kilometers or so, the aurora rays are parallel, but perspective makes them appear to radiate from a vanishing point behind the silhouetted pine tree. Stars in this enchanting northern night include Polaris above and right of the tree top, and yellowish giant stars Shedar (Alpha Cassiopiae) to the left andKochab (Beta Ursae Minoris) to the right. Bright Altair shines through the greenish auroral curtain at the lower left of the scene.
