NGC 4565

 

 

 

이 사진은 은하진화탐사위성(Galaxy Evolution Explorer, 이하 GALEX)이 촬영한 NGC 4565의 사진으로서
이 은하는 18세기 혜성사냥꾼이었던 찰스 메시에의 유명한 목록에 포함되지 않은 천체 중 가장 가까이, 가장 밝게 빛나는 은하 중 하나이다.

 

지구에서 바라보는 시각으로 모서리를 보여주고 있는 이 은하는 머리털자리 방향으로 3천만~5천만 광년 사이에 위치하고 있다.

이 은하는 우리 은하에 대해 거의 수직으로 도열해 있고, 우리 은하 중심의 연결선상 거의 가까이에 위치하고 있다.

 

이 은하는 안드로메다 은하보다 더 밝게 빛나기 때문에, 만약 이 은하가 우리에게 정면을 보이고 있었다면
아마 밤하늘에서 가장 장관을 연출하는 은하중 하나가 되었을 것이다.

 

PL은 GALEX 탐사임무를 관장하고 있으며 이 위성을 제작하였다.

이 탐사임무의 수석개발자는 칼텍의 크리스 마틴이다.

NASA의 고다드 우주비행센터는 이 탐사 임무를 기획하였다.

연구원들은 이 탐사임무에 함께 참여한 한국의 연세대학교와 프랑스 국립우주과학연구소에서 지원하고 있다.

This image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer shows NGC 4565, one of the nearest and brightest galaxies not included in the famous list by 18th-century comet hunter Charles Messier.

From Earth, we have an edge-on view of this galaxy, located about 30 to 50 million light-years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices.

The galaxy is very nearly perpendicular to our own Milky Way galaxy and is situated near the galactic pole. It is more luminous than the Andromeda galaxy, and if our view had been face-on, it would have been one of the most spectacular galaxies in the sky.

JPL managed the GALEX mission and built the science instrument. The mission's principal investigator, Chris Martin, is at Caltech. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., developed the mission under the Explorers Program it manages. Researchers sponsored by Yonsei University in South Korea and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France collaborated on the mission. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.
