NGC 4736

 

 

이 사진은 NASA의 은하진화탐사위성(Galaxy Evolution Explorer, 이하 GALEX)이 자외선으로 촬영한 메시에 94 은하로서, NGC 4736으로도 알려져 있다.

이 은하는 사냥개 자리 방향으로 1천 7백만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

이 나선은하는 은하 중심부에 선명하게 보이는 고리모양으로 유명한 은하이다.

어린 별들은 자외선 영역에서 빛을 내기 때문에 GALEX의 감지기에서 이들은 매우 밝게 나타난다.

천문학자들은 이 은하의 계란형 구조가 새로운 별이 생성되는 지역이 선명한 고리 모양으로 드러나는 원인일 것으로 추측하고 있다.

이 고리 안쪽 은하 중심부에서 발생하는 자외선 빛은 약 100억살 정도에 이른 대단히 오래된 별들과 함께 조합되어 생성되는 것으로 보인다.

 

또한 GALEX는 나선팔 외곽부의 복잡한 별 생성 역사도 보여주고 있다.

청백색 지역은 현재 별들이 생성되고 있는 지역이며, 희미한 붉은 빛을 보이고 있는 지역들은 1억년 이전에 별들을 만들어내던 지역이다.

 

JPL은 GALEX 탐사임무를 관장하고 있으며 이 위성을 제작하였다.

이 탐사임무의 수석개발자는 칼텍의 크리스 마틴이다.

NASA의 고다드 우주비행센터는 이 탐사 임무를 기획하였다.

연구원들은 이 탐사임무에 함께 참여한 한국의 연세대학교와 프랑스 국립우주과학연구소에서 지원하고 있다.

PIA17245: Ultraviolet Ring of Stars

This image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) shows Messier 94, also known as NGC 4736, in ultraviolet light. It is located 17 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici.

The spiral galaxy is punctuated by a distinct ring of stars at its center. The young stars glow with ultraviolet light and thus appear bright to the detectors of GALEX. Astronomers think the galaxy's oval shape may be the reason for this sharp ring of star formation. The ultraviolet light at the very center of the galaxy, within the ring, is likely produced by a combination of extremely old stars, about 10 billion years old.

GALEX highlights the complex star formation history in the outer arms as well. There, the blue-white regions highlight areas of current star formation, and the diffuse faint red light is from regions where star formation ceased more than 100 million years ago.

JPL managed the GALEX mission and built the science instrument. The mission's principal investigator, Chris Martin, is at Caltech. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., developed the mission under the Explorers Program it manages. Researchers sponsored by Yonsei University in South Korea and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France collaborated on the mission. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.
