NGC 6744

 

 

이 사진은 은하진화탐사위성(Galaxy Evolution Explorer, 이하 GALEX)이 촬영한 NGC 6744의 사진으로서 이 은하는 국부 은하군에서 우리 은하와 가장 유사한 모습을 띤 은하중 하나이다.

자외선 대역에서 보풀처럼 보이는 나선팔이 방대하게 펼쳐져 있는 모습이 도드라져 보이고 은하의 외곽지역에서까지 별들의 생성이 발생하고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

이 은하는 공작새자리 방향으로 약 3천만광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

NGC 6744는 우리 은하보다 규모가 큰 은하로서 은하원반은 17만 5천광년의 지름을 가지고 있다.  

이 은하의 지근거리에는 뒤틀린 형태의 동반은하가 위치하는데 이 역시 마치 우리 은하 가까이에 있는 소마젤란 은하를 닮았다.

NGC 6744A라고 불리는 이 동반은하는 상단 우측으로 뽑어나간 은하의 주 나선팔과 겹친 거품모양으로 보인다.

 

JPL은 GALEX 탐사임무를 관장하고 있으며 이 위성을 제작하였다.

이 탐사임무의 수석개발자는 칼텍의 크리스 마틴이다.

NASA의 고다드 우주비행센터는 이 탐사 임무를 기획하였다.

연구원들은 이 탐사임무에 함께 참여한 한국의 연세대학교와 프랑스 국립우주과학연구소에서 지원하고 있다.

PIA17247: Big Brother to the Milky Way

This image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer shows NGC 6744, one of the galaxies most similar to our Milky Way in the local universe. This ultraviolet view highlights the vast extent of the fluffy spiral arms, and demonstrates that star formation can occur in the outer regions of galaxies.

The galaxy is situated in the constellation of Pavo at a distance of about 30 million light-years.

NGC 6744 is bigger than the Milky Way, with a disk stretching 175,000 light-years across. A small, distorted companion galaxy is located nearby, which is similar to our galaxy's Large Magellanic Cloud. This companion, called NGC 6744A, can be seen as a blob in the main galaxy's outer arm, at upper right.

JPL managed the GALEX mission and built the science instrument. The mission's principal investigator, Chris Martin, is at Caltech. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., developed the mission under the Explorers Program it manages. Researchers sponsored by Yonsei University in South Korea and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France collaborated on the mission. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.
