에피메테우스와 토성고리

 

 

 

비록 에피메테우스가 A고리와 F고리 사이에서 공전하는듯 보이지만 이것은 착시에 지나지 않는다.

F고리의 궤도 바깥쪽에서 공전하고 있는 에피메테우스는 토성으로부터 가장 가까운 면이 카시니호에 잡힌 것이며 이에 반해 토성 고리는 토성으로부터 가장 멀리 위치한 면이 사진에 담긴 것이다.

휴, 얼마나 다행인가!

 

이 사진은 햇빛을 받지 않는 토성 고리방향으로 토성고리면으로부터 3도 아래에서 바라본 각도로 촬영되었다.

카시니호에 탑재된 협대역 앵글 카메라에 의해 가시광선으로 촬영된 이 사진은 2013년 4월 15일에 촬영된 것이다.

 

사진에 담긴 에피메테우스까지의 거리는 110만 킬로미터이며 태양 - 에피메테우스 - 카시니호 순으로 정렬된 상태였고 사진의 화각은 30도이다.

사진의 해상도는 한 픽셀당 7킬로미터이다.

Although Epimetheus appears to be orbiting between the A and F rings in this image, it's just an illusion! Epimetheus, which orbits Saturn well outside of the F ring's orbit, is actually on the near side of Saturn to Cassini while the rings seen here are on the far side of the planet. Whew, that's a relief!

This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 3 degrees below the ringplane. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on April 15, 2013.

The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 703,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) from Epimetheus and at a Sun-Epimetheus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 30 degrees. Image scale is 4 miles (7 kilometers) per pixel.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.
