최대 길이를 연출한 태양 필라멘트

어제 태양에서 가장 기다란 필라멘트가 나타났다.

아마 오늘도 있을지 모르겠다.

 

사진에서 중심 바로 아래 보이는 검은 줄기가 태양 표면을 가로지르고 있는 거대한 필라멘트로서 그 길이는 태양 반경보다 훨씬 긴 70만 킬로미터이다.

 

필라메트는 태양 자기장에 의해 붙잡혀있는 고온의 가스로서 만약에 이 모습을 측면에서 봤다면 솟구치는 홍염의 모습을 연출했을 것이다.

 

이 사진에서는 수소복사선에서 나타나는 필라멘트를 보여주고 있으며 그 결과 태양의 채층이 그 모습을 드러내고 있다.

 

NASA의 태양활동관측위성(Solar Dynamics Observatory, SDO)을 포함한 태양관측 망원경들이 이 독특한 구조를 추적하였으며, 어제 SDO는 이 필라멘트를 집어삼키는 소용돌이 자기장을 기록하기도 했다. 

 

태양필라멘트는 일반적으로 수시간으로부터 며칠동안 지속을 계속하기 때문에 이 필라멘트의 일부는 언제든 붕괴되거나 융기를 지속했을 수 있고,
이에 따라 고온의 플라즈마가 태양으로 가라앉았을 수도, 태양계로 분출되어 나갔을 수도 있다.

An Extremely Long Filament on the Sun

Explanation: Yesterday, the Sun exhibited one of the longest filaments ever recorded. It may still be there today. Visible as the dark streak just below the center in the featured image, the enormous filament extended across the face of the Sun a distance even longer than the Sun's radius -- over 700,000 kilometers. A filament is actually hot gas held aloft by the Sun's magnetic field, so that viewed from the side it would appear as a raised prominence. The featured image shows the filament in light emitted by hydrogen and therefore highlights the Sun's chromosphere. Sun-following telescopes including NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) are tracking this unusual feature, with SDO yesterday recording a spiraling magnetic field engulfing it. Since filaments typically last only from hours to days, parts of this one may collapse or erupt at any time, either returning hot plasma back to the Sun or expelling it into the Solar System.
