NGC 1275의 먼지다발

이 먼지다발들은 어떻게 이 은하에 붙어 있는 것일까?

이 먼지다발들은 자신을 파괴시켜 버릴 것임에 틀림없는 은하충돌에도 불구하고 NGC 1275에서 그 명맥을 유지하고 있다.

 

우선  사진의 중앙에 자리잡고 있는 활동성은하 NGC 1275는 상대적으로 우리와 가까운 거리에 위치하고 있는 페르세우스 은하단의 주요 은하이다. 

가시광선에서도 거친 모습을 보여주는 이 활동성은하는 X선과 라디오파를 뿜어내는 거대한 은하이기도 하다.

 

NGC 1275는 은하의 전역에서 물질들이 중심으로 추락하며 강착되고 있는데 이 물질들은 결국 은하의 중심에 자리잡은 초거대질량의 블랙홀에 삼켜질 것이다.

 

이 합성 사진은 허블우주망원경이 비축한 데이터를 이용하여 다시 만들어진 것으로 약 2만 광년의 길이로 뻗어있는 불타오르는 가스줄기들과 잔해들을 부각시켜 보여주고 있다.

 

이 은하에 대한 관측 결과는 은하 중심의 블랙홀 활동으로부터 밀처져 나온 구조가 자기장과의 상호 작용에 의해 유지되고 있음을 말해주고 있다.

 

페르세우스 A (Perseus A)라는 이름으로도 알려져 있는 NGC 1275는 10만 광년의 지름을 가지고 있으며 지구로부터는 2억 3000만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

Filaments of Active Galaxy NGC 1275

Explanation: What keeps these filaments attached to this galaxy? The filaments persist in NGC 1275 even though the turmoil of galactic collisions should destroy them. First, active galaxy NGC 1275 is the central, dominant member of the large and relatively nearby Perseus Cluster of Galaxies. Wild-looking at visible wavelengths, the active galaxy is also a prodigious source of x-rays and radio emission. NGC 1275 accretes matter as entire galaxies fall into it, ultimately feeding a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's core. This composite image, recreated from archival Hubble Space Telescope data, highlights the resulting galactic debris and filaments of glowing gas, some up to 20,000 light-years long. Observations indicate that the structures, pushed out from the galaxy's center by the black hole's activity, are held together bymagnetic fields. Also known as Perseus A, NGC 1275 spans over 100,000 light years and lies about 230 million light years away.
