이 천체들이 모두 눈에 들어오는가?

 

이 사진은 유명한 메시에 천체인 M89를 촬영한 사진이다.

이 은하는 단순한 타원은하처럼 보이며 희미한 껍데기들과 연무자락에 휩싸여 있다.

 

이 껍데기 구조가 만들어진 원인은 지금으로서는 알 수 없다.

그러나 이는 과거 수십억 년 동안 M89에 집어삼켜진 수많은 작은 은하들의 잔해가 남겨놓은 중력조석 작용의 결과물일 가능성이 있다.

 

다른 한편으로 이 껍데기 구조는 마치 연못에 이는 동심원과 같은 구조일 수도 있다.

가까운 과거에 또다른 거대 은하와 충돌한 결과 만들어진 고밀도 파동이 은하 전체에 걸쳐 퍼져나가며 만들어진 것일 수도 있다. 

 

진짜 원인이 무엇이든 간에 이 인상적인 사진은 그리 멀지 않은 과거에 최소한 여러 개의 타원 은하들이 만들어졌다는 점,

그리고 가장 거대한 은하들을 두르고 있는 외곽 헤일로는 실제로는 전혀 균일하지 않으며 매우 복잡하다는 점.

그리고 이러한 복잡성은 근처에 있는 비교적 작은 은하와의 상호작용 또는 강착의 결과라는 점에 대해 점점 의견이 일치해가고 있음을 말해 주고 있다.

 

미리내의 헤일로 역시 이처럼 예상치 못한 복잡성을 보여주는 예 중 하나이다.

 

M89는 처녀자리 은하단의 일원이며 5천만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

M89: Elliptical Galaxy with Outer Shells and Plumes

Explanation: Can you see them? This famous Messier object M89, a seemingly simple elliptical galaxy, is surrounded by faint shells and plumes. The cause of the shells is currently unknown, but possibly tidal tails related to debris left over from absorbing numerous small galaxies in the past billion years. Alternatively the shells may be like ripples in a pond, where a recent collision with another large galaxy created density waves that ripple through this galactic giant. Regardless of the actual cause, thefeatured image highlights the increasing consensus that at least some elliptical galaxies have formed in the recent past, and that the outer halos of most large galaxiesare not really smooth but have complexities induced by frequent interactions with -- and accretions of -- smaller nearby galaxies. The halo of our own Milky Way Galaxyis one example of such unexpected complexity. M89 is a member of the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies which lies about 50 million light years distant.
