모뉴먼트 벨리 상공의 미리내

이처럼 하늘을 가로지르는 미리내를 보기 위해 모뉴먼트 벨리를 반드시 찾아갈 필요는 없지만 도움이 될 수는 있다.

왜나햐면 '뷰트(buttes)'라는 명칭이 붙어 있는 모듀먼트 벨리의 상징물인 바위 봉우리의 장관이 전면에 위치하는 광경은 미국 모뉴먼트 벨리에서만 볼 수 있을 것이기 때문이다.

 

뷰트는 단단한 암석질로 구성되어 있는 바위덩이로서 주변의 무른 바위들이 침식되어 사라진 결과로 남아있는 지형이다.

 

이 사진은 한 달 전에 촬영되었으며 왼쪽에 가장 가까운 뷰트와 그 오른쪽의 뷰트는 '미튼(Mittens, 벙어리장갑)'이라는 이름으로 불리며 이보다 더 멀리 우측으로는 메릭 뷰트가 보이고 있다.

 

초록빛의 대기광이 지평선으로부터 부채살처럼 퍼져나오고 있으며 머리위를 가로지르며 뻗어있는 어두운 대역은 미리내의 중심부이다.

 

우리 은하의 띠는 도시의 광해로부터 멀리 떨어진 곳의 청명한 하늘아래서라면 누구든지 볼 수 있다.

그러나 어두운 하늘 아래에서도 이와 같은 색채를 잡아내기 위해서는 감도높은 디지털 카메라가 필요하다.

The Milky Way over Monument Valley

Explanation: You don't have to be at Monument Valley to see the Milky Way arc across the sky like this -- but it helps. only at Monument Valley USA would you see apicturesque foreground that includes these iconic rock peaks called buttes. Buttes are composed of hard rock left behind after water has eroded away the surrounding soft rock. In the featured image taken a month ago, the closest butte on the left and the butte to its right are known as the Mittens, while Merrick Butte can be seen farther to the right. Green airglow fans up from the horizon. High overhead stretches a band of diffuse light that is the central disk of our spiral Milky Way Galaxy. The band of the Milky Way can be spotted by almost anyone on almost any clear night when far enough from a city and surrounding bright lights, but a sensitive digital camera is needed to capture these colors in a dark night sky.
