아마 이 성운은 고양이가 말썽을 부린듯한 모습으로 식별되는 것으로 유명한 것 같다. 

하지만 아직까지는 어떤 고양이가 전갈자리에 보이는 이 광대한 고양이 발 성운을 만들었는지는 알지 못한다.

 

5,500광년 거리의 고양이발성운은 풍부하게 존재하는 이온화 수소 원자에 의해 발생한 붉은 빛을 뿜어내는 발광성운이다.

 

곰 발톱 성운 또는 NGC 6334로도 알려져 있는 이 성운에는 고작 지난 수백만년 사이에 탄생한 태양 질량의 거의 열배에 달하는 별들이 존재하고 있다.

 

이 사진은 깊은 노출을 사용하여 산소와 수소, 황 복사선으로 담아낸 고양이발성운의 모습을 보여주고 있다.

NGC 6334: The Cat's Paw Nebula

Explanation: Nebulas are perhaps as famous for being identified with familiar shapes as perhaps cats are for getting into trouble. Still, no known cat could have created the vast Cat's Paw Nebula visible in Scorpius. At 5,500 light years distant, Cat's Paw is an emission nebula with a red color that originates from an abundance of ionizedhydrogen atoms. Alternatively known as the Bear Claw Nebula or NGC 6334, stars nearly ten times the mass of our Sun have been born there in only the past few million years. Pictured here is a deep field image of the Cat's Paw Nebula in light emitted by hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur.
