토성에 다가서다.

우주선에서 토성으로 접근한다면 어떤 모습을 보게 될까?

 

그저 상상만 할 필요는 없다. 

지난 2004년 카시니호가 실제 이 일을 해 냈으니 말이다. 

당시 카시니호가 토성에 접근하면서 수천 장의 사진을 촬영하였으며 공전궤도에 진입한 후에는 수십만 장의 사진을 촬영하였다.

 

이 동영상은 카시니 호가 초기에 촬영된 사진들을 아웃사이드 인(Outside In)이라는 제목의 IMAX 영화를 만들기 위해 큰 사이즈의 사진으로 재가공하는 작업의 일환으로 재보정하여 만든 것이다.

 

마지막 부분에서 카시니호가 점점 접근하면서 빠르게 아래로 사라져가는 타이탄과 함께 점점 거대한 모습으로 밝게 빛나는 토성의 모습이 나타난다.

한 바퀴 빙글 도는 토성을 배경으로 카시니호는 거대한 허셜 크레이터가 생생히 보이는 미마스 위를 지나간다.

 

그리고나서 토성의 웅장한 고리가 나타나는데 카시니호는 이 토성 고리의 얇은 평면을 가로지르는 모습을 연출하고 토성 고리가 토성에 드리운 검은 그림자도 모습을 드러낸다. 

 

마지막으로 수수께끼의 얼음 분출을 만들어내는 엔켈라두스가 저 멀리 나타나며, 엔켈라두스에 접근하는 것과 함께 동영상은 끝을 맺는다.

 

현재 카시니호는 연료가 거의 떨어진 상태이며 오는 금요일 토성으로 추락하여 녹아버리는 것으로 최후를 맞게 된다.

Cassini Approaches Saturn

Explanation: What would it look like to approach Saturn in a spaceship? one doesn't have to just imagine -- the Cassini spacecraft did just this in 2004, recording thousands of images along the way, and hundreds of thousands more since entering orbit. Some of Cassini's early images have been digitally tweaked, cropped, and compiled into the featured inspiring video which is part of a larger developing IMAX movie project named Outside In. In the concluding sequence, Saturn looms increasingly large on approach as cloudy Titan swoops below. With Saturn whirling around in the background, Cassini is next depicted flying over Mimas, with large Herschel Craterclearly visible. Saturn's majestic rings then take over the show as Cassini crosses Saturn's thin ring plane. Dark shadows of the ring appear on Saturn itself. Finally, the enigmatic ice-geyser moon Enceladus appears in the distance and then is approached just as the video clip ends. The Cassini spacecraft itself, low on fuel, is scheduled to end on Friday when it will be directed to approach so close to Saturn that it falls in and melts.
