고요한 바다와 전자기폭풍

메사추세츠 케이프 코드에서 촬영된 이 사진에는 북반구 하늘에서 쉽게 알아볼 수 있는 별들이 달빛어린 고요한 바다위로 하늘을 장식하고 있다. 

9월 7일 촬영된 이 사진에는 강력한 지구자기폭풍에 의해 만들어진 다채로운 오로라도 함께 담겨 있다. 

 

현재 태양을 가로지르고 있는 거대한 태양활성지역 AR 2673은 지구보다 훨씬 더 큰 크기를 유지하고 있다. 

 

최근 며칠 사이 이 태양활성지역이 현재 태양 주기에서 가장 강력한 플레어와 지구쪽을 곧바로 향하고 있는 코로나 질량분출을 만들어내고 있다.

Calm Waters and Geomagnetic Storm

Explanation: Very recognizable stars of the northern sky are a backdrop for calm waters in this moonlit sea and skyscape off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Taken on September 7, the photo also records a colorful display of northern lights or aurora borealis triggered by a severe geomagnetic storm. Visible crossing the Sun, the giant solar active region responsible, AR 2673, is much larger than planet Earth. It has produced the strongest flare of the current solar cycle and and the Earth-directed coronal mass ejectionin the last few days.
