3C 75 : 춤추는 두 개 블랙홀

활성은하 3C 75의 중심에서는 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 것일까?

 

X선(파란색)과 라디오파(분홍색) 사진을 합성한 사진 중앙의 밝은 두 점은 상호 공전을 하면서 거대한 전파원인 3C 75에 에너지를 불어넣고 있는 초거대질량의 블랙홀이다.

수백만 도의 X선 복사를 뿜어내는 가스에 둘러싸여 있으며 입자들을 광속에 가까운 속도의 제트로 뿜어내고 있는 이 초거대 질량의 블랙홀들은 서로 2만 5천광년 거리를 두고 떨어져 있다.

 

Abell 400 은하단 내부에서 통합이 진행중인 이 두 개 은하의 핵은 지구로부터 3억 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

 

천문학자들은 이 두 개의 초거대 질량 블랙홀들이 부분적으로 상호 중력에 묶여 있다고 결론지었다. 

왜냐하면 제트의 일관된 후퇴양상이, 초속 1,200킬로미터의 속도로 뜨거운 은하단의 가스를 통과하는 공통적인 움직임에 기인하는 것처럼 보이기 때문이다.

 

원거리의 우주에 존재하는 빽빽한 은하단의 환경하에서 이와 같이 장대한 모습을 연출하는 은하들 간의 충돌은 일반적인 사건으로 생각되고 있다.

통합의 최종 단계가 되면 이들은 강력한 중력파를 발생시키는 천체가 될 것이다.

Two Black Holes Dancing in 3C 75

Explanation: What's happening at the center of active galaxy 3C 75? The two bright sources at the center of this composite x-ray (blue)/ radio (pink) image are co-orbiting supermassive black holes powering the giant radio source 3C 75. Surrounded by multimillion degree x-ray emitting gas, and blasting out jets of relativistic particles thesupermassive black holes are separated by 25,000 light-years. At the cores of two merging galaxies in the Abell 400 galaxy cluster they are some 300 million light-years away. Astronomers conclude that these two supermassive black holes are bound together by gravity in a binary system in part because the jets' consistent swept back appearance is most likely due to their common motion as they speed through the hot cluster gas at 1200 kilometers per second. Such spectacular cosmic mergers are thought to be common in crowded galaxy cluster environments in the distant universe. In their final stages the mergers are expected to be intense sources of gravitational waves.
