깊은 노출로 촬영한 먼지가득한 플레이아데스

잘 알려진 천체인 플레이아데스 별무리는 자신을 통과하고 있는 가스와 먼지 구름을 서서히 파괴시키고 있다.

 

플레이아데스는 지구의 밤하늘에서 가장 밝게 빛나는 산개성단으로서 북반구 대부분의 지역에서 맨눈으로도 볼 수 있는 천체이다.

 

이 별무리를 통과하고 있는 먼지구름은 굴드 벨트(Gould's Belt)의 일부로 추정되고 있다. 

굴드 벨트는 미리내의 특정 지역에 위치하면서 어린 별을 만들어내는 독특한 고리 구름으로서 태양도 이 굴드 벨트에 감싸여 있다.

지난 10만 년 동안 굴드 벨트의 일부는 우연히 플레이아데스를 통과하게 되었고, 이로서 별과 먼지 간에 강력한 상호작용이 발생하고 있다.

 

플레이아데스의 별들로부터 뿜어져 나오는 별빛의 압력은 주위 반사 성운의 먼지들을 현저하게 밀어내고 있는데 이 먼지 입자들 중 비교적 작은 입자들은 좀더 강력하게 밀쳐지고 있다. 

 

단기간의 관점에서 봤을 때 이러한 현상으로 인해 먼지 구름 내의 부분부분에서 덩쿨과 같은 줄기들이 생겨나는 한편 먼지들 간의 층이 형성되고 있다.

이 사진에는 C/2015 ER61 판스타스 혜성이 왼쪽 하단으로 포착되기도 하였다.

The Pleiades Deep and Dusty

Explanation: The well-known Pleiades star cluster is slowly destroying part of a passing cloud of gas and dust. The Pleiades is the brightest open cluster of stars on Earth's sky and can be seen from almost any northerly location with the unaided eye. The passing young dust cloud is thought to be part of Gould's Belt, an unusual ring of young star formation surrounding the Sun in the local Milky Way Galaxy. Over the past 100,000 years, part of Gould's Belt is by chance moving right through the older Pleiadesand is causing a strong reaction between stars and dust. Pressure from the stars' light significantly repels the dust in the surrounding blue reflection nebula, with smaller dust particles being repelled more strongly. A short-term result is that parts of the dust cloud have become filamentary and stratified. The featured deep image also captured Comet C/2015 ER61 (PanSTARRS) on the lower left.
