NGC 613의 먼지와 별들 그리고 초신성

저 점은 어디서 온 것일까?

2016년, 아마추어 천문가인 빅터 부소(Victor Buso)는 자신의 망원경에 새로 구입한 카메라를 부착하여 테스트를 진행 중이었다. 

이때 그는 흥미로운 빛점의 출현을 목격했다.

 

이 관측이 보고된 후 이 점은 이제 막 가시영역에 들어선 초신성 폭발의 섬광임이 밝혀졌다. 

초신성 폭발이 대단히 이른 초기 단계에서 촬영되기는 이번이 처음이다.

 

초신성 폭발이 발견되기 전과 후, 한 시간 간격으로 촬영된 사진이 허블우주망원경이 촬영한 NGC 613의 사진 아래 두 개 상자에 담겨 있다.

 

후행 관측을 통해 SN 2016gkg로 명명된 이 초신성은 초거성의 폭발로부터 발생한 것으로 추정되었으며 이 별의 붕괴된 핵이 별의 껍질을 뚫고 나온 첫 폭발단계를 촬영한 것으로 추정되었다.

 

천문학자들은 초신성을 관측하는데 많은 시간을 보내고 있음에도 이처럼 별이 찢겨지는 단계를 보지못하기 때문에 부소가 촬영한 이 사진은 정말 비할데 없는 큰 행운이 함께 한 것이라 할 수 있다.

NGC 613 in Dust, Stars, and a Supernova

Explanation: Where did that spot come from? Amateur astronomer Victor Buso was testing out a new camera on his telescope in 2016 when he noticed a curious spot of light appear -- and remain. After reporting this unusual observation, this spot was determined to be light from a supernova just as it was becoming visible -- in an earlier stage than had ever been photographed optically before. The discovery before and after images, taken about an hour apart, are shown in the inset of a more detailed image of the same spiral galaxy, NGC 613, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Follow-up observations show that SN 2016gkg was likely the explosion of a supergiant star, and Buso likely captured the stage where the outgoing detonation wave from the stellar core broke through the star's surface. Since astronomers have spent yearsmonitoring galaxies for supernovas without seeing such a "break out" event, the odds of Buso capturing this have been compared to winning a lottery.
