카메라로 담은 오리온자리

이것이 무슨 별자리인지 알아볼 수 있겠는가?

비록 이것은 가장 알아보기 쉬운 패턴을 이루는 별들이기는 하지만 사람의 눈으로는 카메라가 촬영한 이 사진에서처럼 다채로운 각 별의 색깔을 인식하지는 못한다.

이 사진은 20개의 사진을 이어붙인 사진으로서 온도가 낮은 적색거성 베텔게우스가 상단 왼쪽에서 가장 밝은 별로서 강렬한 주황색을 뿜어내고 있다.

 

오리온자리에는 푸른색의 뜨거운 별들이 많다.

우선 초거성 리겔이 하단 우측에서 베텔게우스와 쌍벽을 이루고 있다.

상단 우측으로는 벨라트릭스가 있고 오리온벨트로 정렬하고 있는 3개 별들이 있다. 

이들은 모두 1,500 광년 거리에 위치하고 있으며 이미 많은 연구가 진행된 오리온자리의 별사이우주공간의 먼지구름에서 탄생했다.

 

오리온 벨트 아래 보이는 붉고 흐릿한 대역은 아마 익숙히 보아온 천체일 것이다.

이것이 바로 별들의 육아실인 오리온성운이다.

 

마지막으로 맨눈으로는 볼 수 없지만 사진으로는 대단히 인상적인 모습을 보여주는 바나드의 고리가 있다. 

오리온 벨트와 오리온성운을 감싸고 있는 이 거대한 가스상발광성운은 100년 전 오리온자리를 사진으로 담아낸 에드워드 에머슨 바나드(E. E. Barnard)에 의해 발견되었다.

Explanation: Do you recognize this constellation? Although it is one of the most recognizable star groupings on the sky, Orion's icons don't look quite as colorful to the eye as they do to a camera. In this 20-image digitally-composed mosaic, cool red giant Betelgeuse takes on a strong orange tint as the brightest star at the upper left. Orion's hot blue stars are numerous, with supergiant Rigel balancing Betelgeuse at the lower right, and Bellatrix at the upper right Lined up in Orion's belt are three stars all about1,500 light-years away, born from the constellation's well-studied interstellar clouds. Below Orion's belt a reddish and fuzzy patch that might also look familiar -- the stellar nursery known as Orion's Nebula. Finally, just barely visible to the unaided eye but quite striking here by camera is Barnard's Loop -- a huge gaseous emission nebula surrounding Orion's Belt and Nebula discovered over 100 years ago by the pioneering Orion photographer E. E. Barnard.
