NGC 253

밝게 빛나는 NGC 253 은하는 가장 밝게 보이는 나선은하들 중 하나이며 우주먼지에 가장 많이 둘러싸여 있는 은하이기도 하다.

작은 망원경으로 보이는 외형으로 인해 이 은하는 '은화 은하(the Silver Dollar Galaxy)'라 불리기도 하며 남반구의 조각실자리 경계부분에 위치한 이유로 '조각실자리은하(the Sculptor Galaxy)'로 불리기도 한다.

 

1천만 광년 거리에 위치하는 이 먼지가득한 우주섬은 1783년 수학자이자 천문학자였던 캐롤라인 허셜(Caroline Herschel)에 의해 처음 발견되었다.

약 7만광년 지름의 NGC 253은 우리 미리내은하군에서 가장 가까이 위치하고 있는 조각실자리 은하단을 구성하는 가장 거대한 규모의 은하이다.

 

이 고해상도 사진에서는 나선팔의 먼지 대역에 더해 은하원반으로부터 솟아오르는듯 보이는 먼지덩굴들이 별생성지역 및 갓 태어난 별들로 구성된 별무리들로 화려하게 수놓인 모습을 보여주고 있다.

이처럼 엄청나게 많은 우주먼지들은 빠른 비율로 새로운 별의 탄생을 동반하게 되며, NGC 253이 폭발적으로 새로운 별들을 탄생시키는 은하(Starburst Galaxy)의 반열에 오르게 만들어주었다.

 

NGC 253은 또한 강력한 고에너지 X선과 감마선을 방출하는 것으로도 유명한데, 이는 아마도 이 은하의 중심에 거대한 블랙홀이 자리잡고 있기 때문인듯 하다.

NGC 253: Dusty Island Universe

Explanation: Shiny NGC 253 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible, and also one of the dustiest. Some call it the Silver Dollar Galaxy for its appearance in small telescopes, or just the Sculptor Galaxy for its location within the boundaries of the southern constellation Sculptor. Discovered in 1783 by mathematician and astronomerCaroline Herschel, the dusty island universe lies a mere 10 million light-years away. About 70 thousand light-years across, NGC 253 is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies, the nearest to our own Local Group of Galaxies. In addition to its spiral dust lanes, tendrils of dust seem to be rising from a galactic disk laced with young star clusters and star forming regions in this sharp color image. The high dust content accompanies frantic star formation, earning NGC 253 the designation of astarburst galaxy. NGC 253 is also known to be a strong source of high-energy x-rays and gamma rays, likely due to massive black holes near the galaxy's center.
