NGC 4921

 

 

 

나선은하 NGC 4921은 얼마나 멀리 떨어져 있는 은하일까?

비록 현재로서는 이 천체까지의 거리를 3억 2천만 광년으로 추측하고 있지만
이 천체가 우리로부터 멀어지고 있는 속도를 통해 전체 우주의 팽창율을 보다 정교하게 계산하다보면
이 천체까지의 보다 정교한 거리가 다시금 계산될 수 있을 것이다.

 

이 사진은 허블 우주 망원경을 통해 천체간의 거리를 측정할 수 있는 일종의 지표인

세페이드 변광성을 관측하면서 촬영되었다.

코마 은하단의 구성원인 NGC 4921의 거리 측정 정교화 작업은

국부 우주에서 우리와 가까이 위치하는 이 거대한 은하단까지의 보다 정교한 거리를 결정하는데 도움을 줄 것이다.

거대한 나선은하인 NGC 4921은 비공식으로는 빈혈증에 걸린 은하라고 불리기도 하는데
그 이유는 새로운 별을 형성하는 비율이 매우 낮고, 표면 광도도 매우 낮기 때문이다.

이 고해상도 이미지는 현재로서는 수리가 필요한 허블 ACS 망원경에 의해 촬영되었다.

이 사진에는 이 은하의 밝은 핵과 중심부를 가로지르는 나선, 그리고 먼지고리와 최근에 형성된 푸른 별들,

소규모의 몇몇 동반은하들과, 이 은하와는 완전히 떨어져 있는 더 먼 우주의 은하들과 우리 은하에 속하지 않는 별들이 함께 나타나 있다.

Explanation: How far away is spiral galaxy NGC 4921? Although presently estimated to be about 320 million light years distant, a more precise determination could be coupled with its known recession speed to help humanity better calibrate the expansion rate of the entire visible universe. Toward this goal, this image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in order to help identify key stellar distance markers known as Cepheid variable stars. Since NGC 4921 is a member of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies, refining its distance would also allow a better distance determination to one of the largest nearby clusters in the local universe. The magnificent spiral NGC 4921 has been informally dubbed anemic because of its low rate of star formation and low surface brightness. The remarkably sharp image was made with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, currently in need of repair. Visible in the image are, from the center, a bright nucleus, a bright central bar, a prominent ring of dark dust, blue clusters of recently formed stars, several smaller companion galaxies, unrelated galaxies in the far distant universe, and unrelated stars in our Milky Way Galaxy.
