국부은하군에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 은하 NGC 3621은 약 2천 2백만광년 떨어져 있다.
이 은하는 남반구 바다뱀자리에서 관측할 수 있으며, 멋진 우주섬을 감싸며 휘어돌고 있는 나선팔에는 반짝이는 어린 성단들과 먼지대역이 담겨 있다.
아직까지 지구의 관측자에게 NGC 3621은 단순히 전면을 볼 수 있는 멋진 나선은하만은 아니다.
이 은하의 몇몇 밝은 별들은 우주적규모에서 은하 밖의 천체까지의 거리를 측정하는데 중요하게 사용되는 표준촛불로서 사용되고 있다.
NGC 3621을 촬영한 이 멋진 사진에서는 은하의 밝은 중심지역으로부터 약 10만광년거리에 걸쳐 뻗어있는 은하팔의 모습을 볼 수 있다.
은하 전면으로 크게 보이는 밝은 별들은 우리 은하에 속한 별이며, 사진 가득히. 훨씬 더 멀리 위치하는 은하들이 배경을 채우고 있다.

Explanation: Far beyond the local group of galaxies lies NGC 3621, some 22 million light-years away. Found in the multi-headed southern constellation Hydra, the winding spiral arms of this gorgeous island universe are loaded with luminous young star clusters and dark dust lanes. Still, for earthbound astronomers NGC 3621 is not just another pretty face-on spiral galaxy. Some of its brighter stars have been used as standard candles to establish important estimates of extragalactic distances and the scale of the Universe. This beautiful image of NGC 3621 traces the loose spiral arms far from the galaxy's brighter central regions that span some 100,000 light-years. Spiky foreground stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy and even more distant background galaxies are scattered across the colorful skyscape.
